YermĂn Mercedes - Undergoing hand surgery Mercedes has a hamate fracture in his left hand and will undergo surgery Monday.
Impact Mercedes is expected to require 6-8 weeks to recover following his procedure, so he'll be forced to begin the season on the injured list and is unlikely to return to game action until at least mid-May. The 29-year-old split time between Triple-A Charlotte and the major-league club last year and will likely spend time in the minors once he's healthy. Andrew Vaughn is in line to serve as Chicago's primary designated hitter to begin the year, but Mercedes should be in the mix to return to the majors at some point in 2022.

Yunior Marte - Optioned Thursday Marte was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Marte was competing for a spot in the major-league bullpen, but it appears he'll begin the season in the minors instead. The 27-year-old right-hander has yet to make his major-league debut. He was solid with a 3.49 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 62:23 K:BB in 56.2 innings across 43 appearances with Sacramento last season, and his 3.15 FIP indicates he could have more room to grow.
