Called up for Opening Day
The Nationals recalled Harper from Triple-A Rochester ahead of Tuesday's season opener versus Atlanta, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Washington called up Harper, Kyle McGowin and Sam Clay to provide some extra depth in the bullpen with Will Harris (hand) and Brad Hand (COVID-19 protocols) both opening the season on the injured list. Though Hand was set to serve as the Nationals' closer and Harris was in line for a setup role, Harper isn't expected to see much high-leverage work during his time on the active roster. He made 23 appearances for Washington in 2020, posting a 7.61 ERA over 23.2 innings.

Sent to Triple-A
Harper was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The 31-year-old performed well during spring training with two runs allowed and a 10:2 K:BB over 6.1 innings, but it wasn't enough to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. Harper still figures to be in the mix throughout 2021 as Washington shuffles its bullpen pieces.

Recalled Saturday
Harper was recalled to the Nationals' 28-man roster Saturday after Stephen Strasburg (hand) was put on the 10-day injured list, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Harper has been up and down a lot in the last couple of days, and he was brought back up after the Nats learned that they would have to put Strasburg on the IL. The 31-year-old right-hander will head back to the bullpen, where he's posted an 8.10 ERA with a 3:1 K:BB in 10 innings so far this season.

Serving as 29th man
Harper will serve as the Nationals' 29th man against the Orioles on Friday.
Impact
Harper was optioned to the team's alternate training site earlier in the day, but he'll remain in the bullpen for the originally scheduled game Friday. Although he'll be available Friday, he'll head to alternate camp afterward.

Sent to alternate training site
Harper was optioned to the Nationals' alternate training site Friday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
It's unclear if the 31-year-old will remain with the team as the 29th man for Friday's suspended game and originally scheduled game, but he's ticketed for the alternate site afterward regardless. Harper has allowed eight runs over eight innings with an 11:4 K:BB and is likely to rejoin the big-league club later in the season.

Collects first win
Harper (1-0) picked up the win in Thursday's victory over the Blue Jays, allowing one hit and striking out one over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Impact
The right-hander was the first pitcher out of the bullpen after Erick Fedde hit his pitch limit, and Harper inherited a fairly comfortable 5-2 lead. The 31-year-old has been one of the Nats' most effective relievers in the early going, posting a 0.00 ERA and 6:1 K:BB in five innings over four appearances, but his reliable on off-speed stuff rather than plus velocity makes it unlikely Harper will work his way into the kind of high-leverage role that would give him fantasy appeal in most formats.

Impressive outing Saturday
Harper gave up one hit and struck out four over two scoreless innings of relief during Saturday's win over the Yankees.
Impact
He was able to ring up big names like Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres despite his usual lack of velocity, as Harper didn't break 90 mph with his fastball once the outing. The 31-year-old has a chance to carve out a fairly significant role in the Nats' bullpen while more established arms like Wander Suero (undisclosed) remain on the IL, but Harper's skill at keeping hitters off-balance with breaking stuff may be more effective in the early part of the 2020 schedule before opposition batters get their timing back.
