INJURIES

Cleared for throwing Berger (elbow) was cleared in November to begin a throwing program, MLB.com reports.
Impact Bergert missed the last couple weeks of the regular season with a right elbow strain, but he's fully recovered and will enter spring training without limitations, barring any setbacks. The 25-year-old posted a 3.66 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 73:35 K:BB across 76.1 innings in 2025 between the Padres and Royals and will have a chance to open the 2026 campaign in the major-league rotation.

Out with strained elbow The Royals placed Bergert on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right elbow strain.
Impact Bergert felt something in his pitching arm after throwing his between-starts bullpen session Wednesday and has been diagnosed with a strained elbow. There's no word as to whether he will undergo additional testing, but either way, the injury will end Bergert's season. He posted a promising 3.66 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 73:35 K:BB across 76.1 innings in 2025 and, if healthy, has a good chance to open the 2026 campaign in the Royals' rotation.

Headed for IL The Royals are expected to place Bergert on the 15-day injured list Thursday with forearm tightness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact Bergert reported a problem with his forearm after throwing a bullpen session Wednesday. The 25-year-old's move to the IL will put an early end to his rookie season, giving him a 3.66 ERA and 1.26 WHIP alongside a 73:35 K:BB across 76.1 innings.

Escapes with no-decision in Philly Bergert didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 8-6 loss to the Phillies, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five.
Impact It's the third straight start in which Bergert issued three free passes, and his loss of control has left him with an 8.76 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 14:9 K:BB in 12.1 innings during the skid. The Royals could get one or more of Michael Wacha (concussion), Seth Lugo (back) and Cole Ragans (shoulder) back from the IL in the next week or two, so Bergert's hold on a rotation spot may be slipping. For the moment, he's scheduled to make his next start at home next weekend against the Blue Jays.

Clobbered in loss Bergert (2-2) allowed eight runs on 11 hits and three walks over 3.1 innings to take the loss Monday against Cleveland. He struck out three.
Impact Despite not conceding a homer, Bergert was absolutely lit up in this 77-pitch appearance, coughing up eight runs and 11 hits -- both setting career worsts. The rookie right-hander completely unraveled in the fourth inning, when he gave up six runs on six hits before being relieved by Daniel Lynch. Thanks to this performance, Bergert's ERA ballooned from 2.61 to 3.48 across 72.1 total frames with the Royals and Padres. The 25-year-old projects for tough matchup in his next start, which is currently scheduled to come at Philadelphia this weekend.
