Taking Correa's place at shortstop Lewis has been called up from Triple-A St. Paul and will start at shortstop Friday against the A's, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Impact With Carlos Correa suffering a broken finger after getting hit by a pitch in Thursday's game, Lewis was the logical option to take over at shortstop. The Twins' No. 1 overall prospect and the first overall pick in the 2017 draft, Lewis has been one of the best stories in the minors this year, hitting .310/.427/.560 with three home runs, eight steals on nine attempts, a 15.5 BB% and an 18.4 K% in 103 plate appearances at Triple-A. He missed last year with a torn ACL and has come back better than ever at the plate. Correa will likely miss at least several weeks. If Lewis holds his own, he could remain up once Correa is activated, as he is capable of playing any position on the field.

Optioned to Triple-A Lewis was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Impact Lewis suffered a torn ACL ahead of the 2021 campaign but joined the Twins for major-league spring training this year. The 22-year-old went 1-for-8 with a run, a stolen base and three strikeouts across four Grapefruit League appearances this year, and it's not very surprising to see him sent to the minors following his lengthy layoff. Lewis is still one of Minnesota's top prospect, and it's possible that he could make his major-league debut at some point in 2022 if he performs well in the minors.

Impact The lockout comes at a particularly inconvenient time for a player like Lewis, a top prospect in the organization who hasn't played an official game in affiliated ball since 2019. After he was unable to play in 2020 because of the cancellation of the minor-league season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lewis missed all of 2021 after tearing the ACL in his right knee last February and undergoing surgery. The 22-year-old was at least able to prove his health by taking part in the Twins' final two Instructional League games in mid-October, according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, but Lewis would surely benefit from getting in regular at-bats during intrasquad games this spring, even against minor-league competition. Unfortunately, because of his status as a 40-man player, Lewis isn't available to work out in a team setting, and he'll be ineligible to report to any of the Twins' minor-league affiliates when the season begins in early April if the lockout remains in place. Lewis received only 148 plate appearances at the Double-A level upon earning a mid-season promotion in 2019, but because he's missed more than two years of development time, the Twins could be willing to fast track him to Triple-A St. Paul once the lockout ends.
