Sidelined by strained triceps
The Nationals placed Lovelady on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left triceps strain.
Impact
Lovelady retired the only batter he faced during an appearance Sunday versus the Orioles, but he apparently came out of the outing with an injury. The lefty reliever has filled a variety of roles for the Nationals this season from opener to occasional closer, but he'll now been shelved at least through the All-Star break.

Serving as Monday's opener
Lovelady will start Monday's game against San Francisco, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact
Miles Mikolas was initially slated to start in Monday's series opener. Instead, the Nationals will have Lovelady start on the mound and toss one or two innings before Mikolas takes over in a bulk-relief role. It's the fifth opening assignment of the season for Lovelady, who has a 3.12 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, four saves (in five chances) and a 23:19 K:BB across 26 innings.

Tabbed as opener
Lovelady will start Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact
It will be the fourth opening assignment of the year for the 30-year-old, who has also been in the high-leverage mix for the Nationals with four saves and four holds. The recent return of Clayton Beeter may have pushed Lovelady into more of a middle-relief role, especially with his 1.75 WHIP being unsustainable for a late inning role.

Takes loss, blown save Monday
Lovelady (2-3) was credited with the loss and a blown save Monday against the Marlins. He allowed two runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning and didn't record a strikeout.
Impact
Lovelady has been used in several roles throughout the season, as he has four saves, four holds and a blown save, but he's also pitched as an opener three times. This time, he entered the game in the sixth inning after Cade Cavalli allowed a single to Leo Jimenez. However, he couldn't finish the frame after allowing a two-run homer to Heriberto Hernandez, hitting Jakob Marsee and giving up an RBI double to Connor Norby. Ultimately, he retired Liam Hicks on a popout before making way for Paxton Schultz, who recorded the final out of the inning. Lovelady has made 18 appearances for the Nats this season, posting a 3.24 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 16.2 innings of work.

Secures fourth save
Lovelady earned the save in Saturday's 2-0 win over Atlanta, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
Impact
After opening Friday's contest, Lovelady got the call with a two-run lead in the ninth inning Saturday and slammed the door on 11 pitches. Clayton Beeter pitched each of the previous two nights after returning from injury while Gus Varland threw 12 pitches Friday, so Lovelady drew the assignment against two lefties and the switch-hitting Ozzie Albies. The versatile southpaw is now 4-for-4 in save chances with a 2.38 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB across 22.2 frames while also recording three holds and opening three games.

Serving as opener Friday
Lovelady will serve as the Nationals' opening pitcher in Friday's game versus Atlanta, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact
Lovelady has been used in a variety of roles by the Nats this season, as this will be his third opener assignment, and he has also collected three saves. The lefty will likely pitch just one inning before handing things off to Miles Mikolas, who is set to handle the bulk of the workload Friday.

Collects third save of 2026
Lovelady earned the save in the Nationals' 9-6 win over the Mets on Tuesday after striking out one batter in a scoreless ninth.
Impact
With both Gus Varland and PJ Poulin being deployed in Monday's extra-inning loss, Nationals manager Blake Butera turned to Lovelady to protect the team's three-run lead. Lovelady answered the call, needing just 10 pitches (eight strikes) to close out Tuesday's game and capped things off by striking out Carson Benge. Lovelady has a 2.61 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 20:14 K:BB across 20.2 innings this season.

Working as opener Sunday
Lovelady will serve as the Nationals' opening pitcher in Sunday's game against the Orioles, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact
Lovelady hasn't recorded more than six outs in any of his 17 appearances on the season, so he'll likely cover the first inning or two of Sunday's contest before turning the ball over to Miles Mikolas, who is expected to work in bulk relief. Since the Nationals acquired him from the Mets on April 16, Lovelady has emerged as one of the club's more trusted bullpen arms. He's gathered two saves and three holds and owns an 0.82 ERA over 11 appearances with Washington, but a bloated 19.2 percent walk rate and 95.2 percent strand rate during that stretch suggest that he's benefited from some good fortune.

ROTOWIRE
Collects one-out save
Lovelady didn't allow a run but gave up a hit and a walk in one-third of an inning Friday to record his second save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Orioles. He struck out one.
Impact
Andrew Alvarez, who had already worked three scoreless innings of relief, came out for the ninth to try and complete a combined shutout, but he put the first two runners aboard before being lifted. Gus Varland then tried to close things out, but after a walk, a strikeout and a sacrifice fly, manager Blake Butera turned to Lovelady to get left-handed hitter Gunnar Henderson for the final out. Henderson instead singled home another run, but Lovelady finally fanned Adley Rutschman to escape the jam. The veteran southpaw has been more lucky than good since joining the Nationals bullpen, posting a 0.82 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 12:10 K:BB through 11 innings, but he's seen consistent high-leverage usage and has a win, two saves and three holds in 11 appearances.

Lovelady will serve as the opening pitcher in Saturday's game against Miami.
Impact
Lovelady has given up just one earned run in 7.2 innings since joining the Nationals in mid-April and will now be called upon to make his first career start in the majors. The 30-year-old southpaw will likely pitch the first inning of Saturday's contest before handing the game over to Zack Littell.
