Extra innings brings extra strategy. Just don't expect the top hitters to decide it
One byproduct of the automatic runner on second base is that extra innings are one of the few times managers can still stomach ordering up an intentional walk

Racks up 14 strikeouts
Detmers did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on a hit and no walks over eight innings against Texas. He struck out 14.
Impact
Detmers was utterly dominant, logging a season high in innings while matching Emerson Hancock for the highest single-game strikeout total in MLB this season. His lone blemish was a Jake Burger solo homer in the second inning, as otherwise Detmers carved through the Rangers' lineup while impressively issuing no walks. Though the southpaw was unable to pick up the win, Sunday marked a massive bounce-back effort after he posted a 6.33 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 21.1 innings over his previous four outings. The 26-year-old will carry a 1-5 record with a 4.57 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 75:19 K:BB across 63 innings (11 starts) into his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled for Saturday against Tampa Bay.

Coughs up eight runs in defeat
Detmers (1-5) allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over 5.2 innings in a loss to the Athletics on Tuesday.
Impact
Detmers was largely done in by a disastrous third inning, during which he gave up six runs on seven hits. To his credit, the left-hander hung around to at least prevent the Angels' bullpen from being depleted, and the final two runs on his ledger came after his departure in the sixth frame. Detmers also showed good swing-and-miss stuff with 19 whiffs and eight punchouts, but his ERA took a big hit and jumped from 4.20 to 5.07. He's lined up to face Texas at home in his next start.

Fans six in Wednesday's loss

Impact
A leadoff homer by Angel Martinez set the tone, but it was Detmers' inability to control Cleveland's running game with Sebastian Rivero behind the plate that proved just as costly -- the Guardians went 5-for-5 on steal attempts against the battery, with Martinez and Jose Ramirez each swiping two. Detmers was lifted after 102 pitches (60 strikes), and he'll take a 4.38 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 53:17 K:BB through 49.1 innings into his next start, which is set to come at home early next week against the A's.

Wild in loss to Blue Jays
Detmers (1-3) took the loss against the Blue Jays on Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and six walks with three strikeouts over 3.2 innings.
Impact
Detmers limited the damage but lacked command from the start, throwing just 56 of 99 pitches for strikes while issuing a season-high six walks. It marked the first time he failed to complete four innings all season and snapped a streak of four straight outings working into the sixth frame or beyond. The southpaw owns a 4.33 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB across 43.2 innings and lines up for a road matchup against the Guardians next week.

Stumbles late in no-decision
Detmers did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Mets, allowing three runs on nine hits and no walks with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
Impact
Detmers cruised through six innings and entered the seventh with a 3-1 lead before allowing two runs on five hits and departing with the bases loaded. It still goes down as a quality start for the southpaw, who threw 68 of 95 pitches for strikes with 16 whiffs and has now worked into the seventh frame four times in seven outings. He'll carry a 4.28 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 44:9 K:BB across 40 innings into a road matchup against the Blue Jays next weekend.

Takes no-decision Sunday
Detmers allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision Sunday versus the Royals.
Impact
Detmers has been serviceable in his return to the rotation this year after functioning as a reliever in 2025. That said, he has rarely been all that impressive, allowing at least three runs in four of his six starts. He's at a 4.28 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 36:9 K:BB through 33.2 innings. The Angels don't have a lot of rotation depth, so average or slightly better will likely be enough for Detmers to stay in a starting role. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Mets.

Surrenders four runs in loss
Detmers (1-2) took the loss against Toronto on Monday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over six-plus innings.
Impact
Detmers fell behind in the second inning when he served up a two-run homer to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The left-handed hurler got through the following three frames without incident but then gave up another run in the sixth. Detmers took the mound for the start of the seventh but walked the first batter he faced before being lifted, and the runner he put on base eventually came around to score. This wasn't Detmers' most impressive outing, but on a positive note, he completed six frames for the third time through his first five starts. His transition back to a starting role this season has gone mostly well so far, as Detmers holds a 4.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 31:8 K:BB through 28.2 innings.

Impact
Rather than waiting until the upcoming week to break in a new fifth starter, the Angels will have Walbert Urena enter the rotation for Sunday's series finale while moving each of their other four starters back a day. Detmers tentatively lines up for two starts next week, with his second turn set to come next Sunday in Kansas City.
