To undergo Tommy John surgery
Rodriguez (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery, Andres Soto of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Rodriguez was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday (retroactive to Aug. 23) due to a right elbow injury. He's now expected to miss the 2026 season after opting for Tommy John surgery, which typically requires a 12-to-18-month recovery. The right-hander previously missed over a month in the second half of the 2024 campaign due to right elbow inflammation, and the pain reportedly never fully subsided. Despite that, the 25-year-old earned his first All-Star selection in 2025, recording a 1.78 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 67:11 K:BB across 50.2 innings in 50 appearances.

TJ surgery recommended
Rodriguez (elbow) will decide this weekend whether to undergo Tommy John surgery, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
Rodriguez landed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday (retroactive to Saturday) due to a right elbow issue, and after consulting multiple doctors, the injury is believed to be severe enough for Tommy John surgery to be recommended. The 25-year-old is expected to make his decision this weekend, but surgery would keep him out of action for the entire 2026 season and potentially part of the 2027 campaign as well.

Lands on IL
The Giants placed Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Saturday, with a sprained right elbow.
Impact
Rodriguez was unavailable out of the bullpen for the past few days while battling an elbow issue he picked up during Sunday's win over Milwaukee. Manager Bob Melvin was hopeful the 25-year-old righty would be back in time for Tuesday's series opener against the Cubs, but the Giants will instead be without their primary closer until at least Sept. 7. Ryan Walker will presumably take over as San Francisco's preferred ninth-inning option for the short-term future, and Keaton Winn will come up from Triple-A to replenish the team's bullpen depth.

Dealing with arm soreness
Rodriguez was unavailable for Sunday's 4-3 win against the Brewers due to right arm soreness, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact
Rodriguez was tagged with the loss in Friday's 5-4 defeat in Milwaukee, apparently torquing something in his pitching arm in the process. Ryan Walker was called upon to protect the Giants' one-run lead in the ninth inning Sunday, working around a two-out single by Sal Frelick to earn a save. Rodriguez still appears to be in the driver's seat for the ninth-inning role with San Francisco, and he can be considered day-to-day ahead of Monday's off day.

Picks up loss Friday
Rodriguez took the loss in Friday's 5-4 defeat to the Brewers, allowing one home run while striking out one across one inning.
Impact
Rodriguez entered the game with two outs in the eighth inning and struck out the first batter he faced. The 25-year-old retired two straight hitters in the ninth with the game tied at 4-4, but he gave up a walk-off home run to William Contreras. Rodriguez owns a 1.78 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and a 67:11 K:BB across 50.2 innings across 50 games this season.

Records fourth save
Rodriguez allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Monday's 4-3 win over the Padres.
Impact
Rodriguez has been a little shaky since taking over closing duties at the tail end of July. He's allowed five runs in six innings while converting just three of five save chances and taking three losses over his last six appearances. Despite the recent struggles, Rodriguez is still boasting strong season-long numbers with a 1.63 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 66:11 K:BB over 49.2 innings. He's up to four saves as well as 13 holds in 49 appearances.

Earns third save
Rodriguez threw a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Pirates. He did not record a strikeout.
Impact
Rodriguez was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning and needed just 13 pitches to shut the door. It was an encouraging bounce-back after he allowed two runs and blew his first save chance in the closer role Monday. On the year, the 25-year-old owns a 1.51 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 64:11 K:BB with three saves and 13 holds across 47.2 innings.

Impact
Rodriguez was seeking to convert his second straight save since Camilo Doval was traded to the Yankees at the deadline. Things were shaky from the start, as the flamethrowing righty walked Andrew McCutchen to open the ninth. After placing another runner aboard via a hit-by-pitch, Joey Bart knotted the game at 4-4 with an RBI single. The next batter, Isiah Kiner-Falefa then plated the winning run on a groundball fielder's choice. Rodriguez should continue to serve as the main saves option in San Francisco; however, if he blows future opportunities, former Giants closer Ryan Walker is waiting in the wings. Rodriguez has pitched to a 1.54 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 64:11 K:BB across 46.2 total innings.

Secures second save in extras
Rodriguez earned the save in Friday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Mets, recording one walk and one strikeout in a scoreless 10th inning.
Impact
Rodriguez was called on to protect a one-run lead in the 10th inning, needing 16 pitches to secure his first save since officially being named the Giants' new closer. The 25-year-old has been one of baseball's top relievers, boasting a 1.17 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 63:46 K:BB ratio across 46 innings with two saves and 13 holds. He should only become more valuable in his new role moving forward.
