INJURIES

Collects first major-league save Schultz earned the save in the Nationals' 2-1 extra-inning win over the White Sox on Sunday, allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out two in the 10th frame.
Impact Gus Varland and Richard Lovelady were deployed in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, which prompted the Nationals to turn to Schultz to protect the team's 2-0 lead. A Tristan Peters RBI single brought home the White Sox's ghost runner in the 10th inning, but Schultz shut the door by striking out the next two batters he faced to come away with the first save of his major-league career. Varland blew his save chance Saturday, and given that he pitched in the eighth inning of Sunday's game, Schultz might be in the mix for save opportunities for as long as Clayton Beeter (forearm) is on the 15-day injured list.

Abrams' sacrifice fly, Tena's pinch-hit HR in the 10th lift Nationals over White Sox 2-1

CJ Abrams’ sacrifice fly scored automatic runner Daylen Lile from third in the 10th inning, pinch-hitter José Tena followed with a solo homer and the Washington Nationals beat the...

Back in majors The Nationals recalled Schultz from Triple-A Rochester on Sunday.
Impact The right-hander was sent to Rochester last weekend but will quickly rejoin the big club with Clayton Beeter (forearm) landing on the injured list. Schultz has given up four earned runs with a 7:1 K:BB over eight MLB innings this season and should fill a low-leverage relief role while up with the Nationals.

Shuttled to Rochester Schultz was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday.
Impact Schultz threw three innings and 48 pitches Friday, a long enough outing that he will likely be unavailable for a few days. The Nationals' bullpen was taxed heavily again Saturday, likely creating a need for fresh arms Sunday. Schultz has been fairly effective across 8.0 innings this season, and he'll almost certainly be back in the majors at some point this season.

APRIL 7 • MLB.COM
Returns from injured list The Nationals activated Schultz (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact Schultz missed much of spring training and the start of the season while recuperating from right elbow inflammation, but he's ready to go after making three rehab appearances. He was claimed off waivers by the Nationals over the offseason and is likely slated for a middle relief role.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Kicks off rehab assignment Schultz (elbow) struck out two and allowed no hits and one walk over 1.2 scoreless innings in his first rehab appearance Saturday for Triple-A Rochester.
Impact The appearance was Schultz's first since Feb. 28, after he had missed the final three weeks of the Grapefruit League due to right elbow inflammation. The 28-year-old will likely make at least another rehab appearance or two before returning from the injured list. While the Nationals will likely use him in lower-leverage spots initially once he's activated, Schultz could quickly move his way into a more prominent role if he pitches well early on, given the lack of established options in the bullpen.
MARCH 30 • ROTOWIRE
Officially placed on 15-day IL The Nationals placed Schultz on the 15-day injured list Monday, retroactive to Sunday, due to right elbow inflammation.
Impact Schultz did not pitch in a Grapefruit League game since Feb. 28 due to his elbow injury, which is severe enough for him to open the 2026 regular season on the injured list. The earliest he can be activated from the IL is early April, but the Nationals have not indicated when the 28-year-old right-hander will embark on a rehab assignment.
MARCH 23 • ROTOWIRE
Headed for IL Schultz has been contending with right elbow discomfort of late and is expected to be placed on the injured list prior to Thursday's season opener versus the Cubs, Mark Zuckerman o...
Impact The elbow injury explains why Schultz hadn't made any Grapefruit League appearances since Feb. 28. Schultz had been enjoying a strong spring prior to missing time with the injury, but with a trip to the shelf on tap to begin the season, he'll likely be eased back in as a low-leverage reliever once he's deemed ready to make his 2026 debut. The Nationals haven't provided a timeline for when Schultz might be ready to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment.

Claimed by Nationals The Nationals claimed Schultz off waivers from the Blue Jays on Friday.
Impact Schultz reached the majors with the Jays in 2025 for the first time, finishing with a 4.38 ERA and 28:8 K:BB over 24.2 innings of work. The 28-year-old has past starting experience but has worked mostly as a reliever the last two years. Schultz will compete for a spot in the Nationals' bullpen.

Infielder Kazuma Okamoto and the Toronto Blue Jays have finalized their $60 million, four-year contract
JANUARY 4 • Associated Press
Designated for assignment Schultz was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Sunday, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports.
Impact Schultz was dropped from the 40-man roster to make room for infielder Kazuma Okamoto, who the team signed Saturday. Schultz posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 24.2 innings in 13 regular-season appearances, including two starts, with Toronto in 2025. He'll now be subject to waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, the right-hander will likely stick around with the Blue Jays' organization.
JANUARY 4 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A The Blue Jays optioned Schultz to the spring training complex on Friday.
Impact Schultz is being sent back down after making one scoreless appearance during his most recent stint with the big club. His spot on the roster and in the bullpen will be absorbed by Justin Bruihl.

Back with Jays The Blue Jays recalled Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Impact With Jose Berrios on the shelf with elbow inflammation, the Jays will turn to Paxton Schultz to give the club another multi-inning relief option for the final few regular-season contests. The 27-year-old righty owns a 4.38 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 24.2 innings with Toronto this season.

Optioned to Triple-A The Blue Jays optioned Schultz to Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Impact Schultz has pitched in 12 games out of the bullpen for Toronto this season, registering a 4.56 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 27:8 K:BB across 23.2 innings. Following the Blue Jays' deadline acquisitions of Seranthony Dominguez and Louis Varland, Schultz is the odd man out.
AUGUST 1, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Activated from IL The Blue Jays reinstated Schultz (finger) from the 15-day injured list after Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Orioles, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact The right-hander landed on the shelf about a month ago due to finger inflammation but will rejoin the Blue Jays after a two-game rehab assignment. Schultz will provide Toronto with some much-needed bullpen depth after a 16-4 loss in Tuesday's matinee.
