DFA'd by San Francisco
The Giants designated Basabe for assignment Wednesday.
Impact
The move makes room on the Giants' 40-man roster for Logan Porter, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Sacramento after Patrick Bailey (neck) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Basabe was traded by the Rays to the Giants in February and was unable to crack San Francisco's Opening Day roster. He's slashing .242/.287/.352 with three steals, one triple, four home runs and 20 RBI across 198 plate appearances in Triple-A this season.

Healthy at Triple-A
Basabe (shoulder) appeared in both of Triple-A Sacramento's first two games of the season, going 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
Impact
Basabe dealt with a shoulder strain in spring training before he was optioned to minor-league camp March 10, but he looks to be fully healthy for the start of the season. He spent the 2024 season at Triple-A Durham in the Tampa Bay organization and slashed .248/.293/.336 with five home runs and four stolen bases across 283 plate appearances.

Cut from big-league camp
The Giants optioned Basabe (shoulder) to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday.
Impact
After reaching the majors with the Rays in 2023 and appearing in 31 games, Basabe spent the entire 2024 campaign in the minors and struggled during his time in the International League, slashing .248/.293/.336 over 283 plate appearances. The Giants acquired him in February and handed him a spot on the 40-man roster, but Basabe was unlikely to break camp even a strained right shoulder hadn't kept him from playing in the Cactus League since Feb. 25. If he's healthy to begin the minor-league season, Basabe should be in line to handle a near-everyday role with Triple-A Sacramento.

Dealing with shoulder strain
Basabe will not throw for 2-to-4 days after being diagnosed with a right shoulder strain, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
It's not clear how or when Basabe was hurt, but the Giants do not seem overly concerned about the injury at this time. That said, it could impact Basabe's chances at winning a utility role, which already had seemed pretty low.

Traded to San Francisco
The Giants acquired Basabe from the Rays on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Basabe had been designated for assignment and is now on the move to a new organization. The 24-year-old missed much of 2024 due to injury and, when on the field, slashed only .248/.293/.336 over 66 contests at Triple-A Durham. Basabe is a versatile defender and is projected to serve as utility depth at Triple-A Sacramento.

Booted from 40-man roster
The Rays designated Basabe for assignment Monday, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.
Impact
The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Alex Faedo. Basabe, 24, missed a large chunk of the 2024 season with a fractured wrist, slashing just .248/.293/.336 over 66 contests during his time at Triple-A Durham. He has minor-league options left and could draw interest from a team looking for utility depth.

The 23-year-old had started games at shortstop, second base and third base with Durham before getting hurt and should go back to bouncing around the infield at the Triple-A level.

Sent packing to Triple-A
The Rays optioned Basabe to Triple-A Durham on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Short-term opportunity
Basabe is starting at shortstop and hitting eighth Saturday against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Taylor Walls (personal) will be away from the team for the next couple of games, leaving Basabe as the most likely candidate to stand in at shortstop. Across his first 74 plate appearances in the majors, Basabe has maintained a .221/.284/.324 line with one home run, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Losing work to Taylor Walls
Basabe is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Basabe is on the bench for a second straight game and appears to have lost hold of the everyday role at shortstop after Taylor Walls was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday. Though Basabe manned shortstop in Friday's 3-2 loss, Walls will pick up a second consecutive start Sunday in place of the rookie. Since he was called up from Triple-A Durham on Aug. 12 and replacing Wander Franco (personal) as the Rays' primary option at shortstop, Basabe has slashed .250/.316/.365 with one home run and nine RBI across his first 57 big-league plate appearances.

Set to lose work
Basabe went 1-for-4 Friday against the Guardians.
Impact
Basabe has played an everyday role at shortstop since Wander Franco (personal) has been sidelined. He's performed fairly well across 16 games, maintaining a .255 average with one home run, nine RBI and 10 runs scored. However, Taylor Walls (oblique) was activated from the injured list Friday and per MLB.com, he will serve as the Rays' starting shortstop moving forward. Meanwhile, Basabe will shift to a utility role and will almost certainly lose out on playing time.

Gets Wednesday off
Basabe is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Basabe will head to the bench for the first time since being called up from Triple-A Durham and taking over as the Rays' everyday shortstop after Wander Franco was placed on the restricted list. The 22-year-old is off to a hot start to his big-league career, going 10-for-33 (.303 average) with a home run, three doubles, eight RBI and eight runs through his first eight games. Though Isaac Paredes will pick up a start at shortstop, Basabe should have a clear path to a regular spot in the lineup while Franco remains away from the team for the foreseeable future.

Notches first three-hit game
Basabe went 4-for-9 with two doubles, a walk, three runs and two RBI across both games of a doubleheader split versus the Angels on Saturday.

Basabe notched a hit and scored a run in the matinee before breaking through with three knocks in the nightcap. Two of those hits went for a double, each of which knocked in a run. That Basabe started both games of the twin bill emphasizes the near-everyday role he has settled into since his promotion from the minors Aug. 12. He's slashed .286/.355/.393 with three doubles, six runs and four RBI over seven contests since the call-up.
