Back with Padres as NRI The Padres re-signed Cruz to a minor-league contract Dec. 18 that includes an invitation to spring training, Alejandra M. Razo of MSN.com reports.

Impact Cruz was non-tendered by the Padres in November but has re-upped on a minor-league pact. The lefty permitted two runs over 3.2 innings during his brief stint with the Padres in 2025 and is likely ticketed for Triple-A El Paso to begin the 2026 campaign.

Not extended contract The Padres non-tendered Cruz on Friday.

Impact Cruz gave up two runs over 3.2 innings during his brief stint with the Padres in April, but most of his time was spent at Triple-A El Paso, where he put up a 4.75 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 83.1 innings. He'll now have a chance to join another organization that can offer a clearer path back to the majors, though he likely wouldn't serve as anything more than a middle reliever.

Sent to Triple-A The Padres optioned Cruz to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.

Impact Cruz was unlikely to be available for at least a few days after tossing 2.2 innings and 68 pitches in relief in Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Cubs, so the Padres elected to swap him off the active roster for a fresh bullpen arm in right-hander Logan Gillaspie, whose contract was selected from Triple-A. San Diego designated left-hander Tom Cosgrove for assignment to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Gillaspie.

Optioned to minor-league camp The Padres optioned Cruz to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.

Impact Cruz reached Triple-A for the first time last season, where he logged a 4.42 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 38.2 frames. He performed a bit better in the Cactus League, surrendering just one run in five innings, but San Diego will need a larger sample size from him at El Paso before granting him a bullpen spot.

Selected to 40-man roster The Padres selected Cruz to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Impact Cruz's addition to the 40-man roster will prevent him from being selected by another organization during December's Rule 5 Draft. However, he only managed a 4.42 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in his first season at Triple-A, so a promotion to the major leagues may still be a ways away.
