Out with illness Schanuel's absence from the lineup Saturday against the Mets is due to illness, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Impact Schanuel was scratched Saturday and replaced by Trey Cabbage, but the Angels said at the time of the chance that he wasn't dealing with any injury. That is indeed the case, and given that the illness he's battling appears to be food poisoning, it's likely he could return as soon as Sunday.

Impact The Angels have yet to announce a reason for Schanuel's absence, but Fletcher reports that the issue isn't a serious one. Trey Cabbage will get the start at first base in Schanuel's absence.

Impact Schanuel will take a seat for the first time since his promotion from Double-A Rocket City on Friday. He started at first base and served as the Angels' leadoff man in each of the past four games, going 4-for-15 with four base hits, two walks and four runs. The lefty-hitting Schanuel's absence from the lineup for the first game of the day comes with southpaw Andrew Abbott on the hill for Cincinnati, but so long as he can retain a regular spot atop the order versus righties, the 21-year-old rookie could be an excellent source of runs while batting in front of Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.

Reaches twice in MLB debut Schanuel went 1-for-4 with a walk and scored twice in Friday's loss to Tampa Bay.

Impact After being recalled from the minors Friday, Schanuel was slotted into the leadoff spot in his big-league debut. He struck out in his first plate appearance but followed with an eight-pitch, two-out walk in the second that loaded the bases for Shohei Ohtani, who proceeded to hit a grand slam. Schanuel later singled in the seventh for his first MLB hit and came around to score on a Brandon Drury double. The rookie will likely get plenty of opportunity to play while up in the majors, at least for as long as C.J. Cron (back) remains on the injured list.

Batting leadoff in MLB debut Schanuel is playing first base and batting leadoff in his major-league debut Friday versus the Rays.

Impact Schanuel will be thrust right to the top of the Angels' batting order less than two months after being selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Florida Atlantic University. He was slashing .370/.510/.493 through his first 96 professional plate appearances this summer between the Arizona Complex League, Single-A Inland Empire and Double-A Rocket City. C.J. Cron (back) went on the injured list Friday, giving the 21-year-old Schanuel a prime opportunity to impress at baseball's highest level.
