Nolan McLean Gives Mets Enough Reason For Hope In Sweep Clinching Win
The Mets should feel confident that the best is yet to come for Nolan McLean after Sunday's performance against the Marlins.

Battles control issues in win
McLean (3-4) earned the win against the Marlins on Sunday, allowing one run on two hits and five walks with two strikeouts over five innings.
Impact
McLean was backed by an offensive outburst from the Mets and managed to complete five frames despite issuing a season-high five walks and hitting a batter. While the result was certainly an improvement over the 13 earned runs he surrendered across his previous two starts, the 24-year-old will still finish May with a 6.10 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in six outings. He'll carry a 4.21 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 77:24 K:BB over 66.1 innings this season into a road matchup against the Padres next weekend.

Roughed up in loss
McLean (2-4) took the loss Monday against the Reds, allowing seven runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 3.1 innings.
Impact
McLean looked sharp early by striking out the side in the first inning, but things unraveled quickly after that. He allowed three consecutive baserunners in the second inning to plate the game's first run before surrendering a solo homer to JJ Bleday in the third. The fourth inning proved disastrous, as five of the six batters he faced reached base and four more runs came across before his exit. The right-hander has now allowed six or more runs in consecutive outings and has surrendered a homer in four straight starts. While he has shown the strikeout upside, McLean owns a 5.16 ERA and 1.32 WHIP during the month of May and is scheduled to face a Miami lineup that has put up great numbers recently next.

Command issues in Tuesday's loss
McLean (2-3) took the loss against the Nationals on Tuesday, allowing nine runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out five across 5.2 innings.
Impact
McLean was afforded an early 5-0 run thanks to a pair of two-run homers by Bo Bichette, but that lead quickly evaporated after McLean gave up an inside-the-park grand slam to James Wood in the second inning and another five runs over the next two frames. Three of those five runs were unearned, but it was still a rough outing for McLean, whose six earned runs and eight hits were both career-worsts. He'll take a 3.57 ERA and 1.03 WHIP (58 innings) into his next start, which is lined up for this weekend on the road against the Marlins.

Grabs second win
McLean (2-2) earned the win Thursday over the Tigers, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings. He truck out seven.
Impact
Things looked dicey for McLean early, after he gave up a three-run homer to Gage Workman in the first inning to put the Mets behind early. However, McLean would bear down and blank the Tigers over his subsequent six frames while New York would rally for an eventual 9-4 victory. It's the first win since April 3 for McLean, despite a 2.83 ERA in his subsequent six starts. Overall, his ERA sits at 2.92 this season across nine outings (52.1 innings) with a 0.96 WHIP and 64 strikeouts. McLean will look to keep rolling his next time out, tentatively scheduled to come next week in Washington.

Fans six in no-decision Friday
McLean didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with six strikeouts across six innings.
Impact
McLean isn't picked up a win since April 3 against the Giants and hasn't factored into the decision in four of his past five starts. He generated just nine whiffs on 100 pitches against Arizona but continued to get strong results in what has been a great start to the season for the 24-year-old. McLean has a 1-2 record but owns a sterling 2.78 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 57:12 K:BB across 45.1 innings. McLean is in the 95th percentile in strikeout rate and average exit velocity, and his 2.32 xERA points to McLean being a bonafide ace through eight starts.
