Anderson, Braves slip by slumping Yanks with 4 hits, win 4-1

Ian Anderson took a shutout into the seventh inning, Austin Riley homered and the Atlanta Braves scraped by with just four hits to beat the punchless New York Yankees 4-1

Charged with loss Friday Nelson (0-2) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two in one inning as he was charged with the loss against the Rays on Friday.
Impact Nelson made his first career start as the opener Friday, but the Rays got on the board with a walk and a pair of doubles to begin the game. The Yankees were unable to generate much run production offensively, resulting in Nelson's second loss in his first four appearances of the season. He's posted a 10.80 ERA and 10:3 K:BB in five innings this year.

Yanks' Nelson, Rays' Wacha to start series opener

Nick Nelson will start for the New York Yankees in the series opener against the AL champion Tampa Bay Rays and Michael Wacha

Opening Friday Nelson will open Friday's game against the Rays, Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports.
Impact The 25-year-old primarily worked as a starter in the minors and will now make his first career start in the majors. Nelson has covered four innings across three appearances out of the bullpen this season, so he'll likely be limited to a few frames Friday. Michael King is expected to follow as the primary pitcher for the Yankees.

Hill sharp, Kluber roughed up as Rays beat Yankees 10-5

Rich Hill pitched six strong innings, Austin Meadows led a hit parade against Corey Kluber and New York’s bullpen, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Yankees 10-5 to snap a four-game...

Suffers hard-luck loss Thursday Nelson (0-1) was tagged with the loss Opening Day against Toronto, allowing one unearned run on one hit while striking out three.
Impact Nelson looked good in the appearance, throwing 11 of 15 pitches for strikes and getting all three of his outs via strikeout. However, he allowed a leadoff 10th-inning double to Randal Grichuk, permitting Jonathan Davis -- who was on second base due to the MLB extra-innings rule -- to come around to score. Despite the disappointing outcome, Nelson's ability to recover and strike out the subsequent three batters bodes well for his outlook following a strong spring.

Earns spot on Opening Day roster Nelson will begin the campaign as a member of the Yankees' bullpen, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
Impact This news comes as little surprise after Nelson put together a superb spring, posting a 10:1 K:BB across 10 innings and allowing only one run. The 25-year-old was primarily a starter in the minors and could fill a flexible role for New York. He often threw multiple relief innings during his debut big-league campaign in 2020, and he could work his way into high-leverage situations if he carries his Grapefruit League momentum into the regular season.

Now a true reliever, Nick Nelson is learning how to recover like a big leaguer: with cherry juice and sleep Nelson experimented with recovery in the offseason.

Could fill versatile role Nelson is viewed by the Yankees as an option for both long and short relief, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. "I'm quite certain he can impact our bullpen in a short situation but al...
Impact Nelson was primarily a starter in the minor leagues, but he came out of the bullpen for all 11 of his appearances with New York last season. The 25-year-old isn't seen as a contender for a starting role but has a shot to break camp as a member of the team's bullpen, which would offer the Yankees situational flexibility.
MARCH 4, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Could join rotation Nelson was mentioned by Yankees manager Aaron Boone on Saturday as a candidate to take James Paxton's (forearm) spot in the rotation, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact The Yankees don't need to come to a decision on Paxton's replacement immediately with their weekend series against the Mets cancelled due to coronavirus concerns, but the southpaw is expected to be shelved for at least two weeks, so the team will eventually need to fill his spot. Nelson has come out of the bullpen for each of his three big-league appearances; however, he was developed as a starter in the minor leagues. The 24-year-old has spent much of the season at the team's alternate training site but impressed with a three-inning scoreless outing upon his return to the big-league club Tuesday.
AUGUST 22, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sent down after rough outing The Yankees optioned Nelson to their alternate training site Thursday.
Impact With the Yankees having to reduce their active roster from 30 to 28 men ahead of Thursday's series finale with the Phillies, Nelson found himself as the odd man out in manager Aaron Boone's nine-man bullpen. Nelson's demotion was likely solidified after he was hit hard in long relief Wednesday in the Yankees' 11-7 loss in the first game of a doubleheader. He recorded five outs and surrendered seven runs (six earned0 on seven hits and a wakl.
AUGUST 6, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Impressive in big-league debut Nelson (1-0) pitched three scoreless and hitless innings to earn the win against Boston on Saturday, issuing two walks while striking out four.
Impact Nelson was summoned to start the fifth inning and exited after the seventh without allowing a hit. His control was shaky -- only 23 of his 41 pitches were strikes, and he yielded two free passes -- but he avoided any damage by inducing eight swinging strikes and holding the Red Sox without a hit. The right-hander struck out 114 batters in 89.2 innings in the minors last season, so he could have a bright future, especially if he is able to reduce his walk rate.
