Zach Thornton - MLB debut set to come Wednesday The Mets plan to call up Thornton from Triple-A Syracuse to pitch in Wednesday's game in Washington, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Impact New York has yet to announce whether Thornton will be utilized as a starter or a bulk reliever out of the bullpen in his MLB debut, but he'll be assuming the rotation spot of Clay Holmes, who was placed on the injured list over the weekend after fracturing his right fibula during his start in Friday's loss to the Yankees. Thornton, a 24-year-old lefty, isn't regarded as a major prospect but has been highly effective between stops at Double-A Binghamton and Syracuse this season, logging a 3.55 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB in six starts. The Mets are expected to get Kodai Senga (spine) back from the IL within the next few weeks, but Thornton could still be well positioned to maintain a more permanent spot in the rotation if he can carry over his success from Double-A and Triple-A in his first taste of the majors.

MJ Melendez - Idle against right-hander Melendez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Nationals.

Impact Since the calendar flipped to May, Melendez's performance has taken a dramatic step backward. Over 15 games on the month, Melendez has slashed just .138/.286/.207 with one extra-base hit and a 34.3 percent strikeout rate. Now on the bench Monday against a righty starter (Jake Irvin) after most of his previous absences had come versus left-handed pitching, Melendez could be losing hold of his strong-side platoon role.

Yovanny Cruz - Contract selected The Yankees selected Cruz's contract from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Impact Cruz has earned a look from the big club after putting up a 3.00 ERA and 23:9 K:BB over 18 innings out of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen. The 26-year-old will be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game.

Elmer Rodríguez - Optioned after spot start The Yankees optioned Rodriguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Impact Rodriguez was solid in a spot start Sunday versus the Mets, yielding one run on five hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. He had seemed in line to make one more start for the Yankees before Gerrit Cole (elbow) returns, but instead Rodriguez will rejoin the rotation at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
