Nestor Cortes - MLB News, Rumors, & Updates

Activated from MiLB IL Cortes (undisclosed) was activated from the 7-day injured list Sept. 8.

Impact It's not clear as to what forced Cortes to miss time on the shelf after inking a big-league deal with Philly on Aug. 19, but he's returned to full strength down the stretch of the 2026 campaign. He's pitched in three games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley since being activated, allowing three runs on six hits while fanning seven over 5.2 frames.

Placed on IL at Single-A Cortes was placed on the 7-day injured list at Single-A Clearwater on Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic reports.

Impact Cortes has yet to pitch in a game since signing with the Phillies on a major-league contract last Wednesday, and he'll now have to wait a bit longer to make his organizational debut. It's unknown whether his latest trip to the injured list is related to the biceps injury that required him to undergo surgery in October.

Lands MLB deal with Phillies Cortes (biceps) agreed Wednesday with the Phillies on a major-league contract, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Impact The 31-year-old southpaw had been unsigned since the end of the 2025 season after undergoing surgery in October to repair a tendon tear in his throwing arm, but he's made a full recovery from the procedure and recently threw for multiple teams. He'll elect to continue his career with the Phillies, who didn't add to their rotation ahead of trade deadline and are lacking in dependable arms beyond their elite trio of starters (Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler and Jesus Luzardo). Cortes could need some time to build up at the Phillies' facility in Florida and potentially go out on a minor-league rehab assignment, but once he's stretched out enough to handle five innings, he could supplant Andrew Painter (6.43 ERA, 1.55 WHIP over 85.1 innings) as the Phillies' No. 5 starter.

Slated for another sim game Cortes (biceps) will toss another sim game early in the coming week, per MLB.com.

Impact Cortes' most recent sim game, which took place Friday, lasted two innings and went well, according to Padres manager Mike Shildt. The team nonetheless wants the veteran lefty to throw to hitters one more time before potentially returning to the big-league club. That would still give Cortes a chance of being activated from the IL before the end of the regular season, though that likely wouldn't happen until near the end of the coming week.
