Jettisoned from 40-man roster Gomez was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Monday.

Impact Gomez loses his spot on the 40-man roster in favor of Alfonso Rivas, who was claimed off waivers. The 25-year-old Gomez has slugged 69 home runs over the last two seasons in the minors but has also struck out at a 33.1 percent clip over that time. Even with the swing-and-miss concerns, Gomez could draw interest on waivers with his power and relative youth.

Optioned out to Triple-A Gomez was optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals on Thursday.

Impact Gomez was sporting a weak .589 OPS through 35 plate appearances this spring in the Grapefruit League. He racked up 39 homers in 120 games last year between Double-A and Triple-A, putting him in line to likely make his MLB debut at some point in 2023.
