Sent down to Triple-A The Royals optioned Spence to Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.
Impact Spence was lit up for 10 earned runs in just 1.1 innings during Friday's 22-1 blowout loss, so the Royals will send him back to the minors in favor of Eric Cerantola. Spence has given up at least six earned runs in all three of his MLB appearances this season and owns a 6.47 ERA through 48.2 frames at Omaha.
JUNE 27 • ROTOWIRE
Hammered in loss Spence (0-2) took the loss against the White Sox on Friday, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings.
Impact Spence was recalled to handle bulk relief duties with Stephen Kolek placed on the paternity list, and he was charged with 10 runs in a nightmare third inning. The 28-year-old has surrendered 22 earned runs in just 9.1 major-league innings this season and will likely be sent back to Triple-A Omaha upon Kolek's return.

Tristan Peters hits grand slam in the White Sox's 22-1 romp over the Royals

Recalled from Triple-A The Royals recalled Spence from Triple-A Omaha on Friday.
Impact With Stephen Kolek going on paternity leave and missing his scheduled start Friday against the White Sox, Spence will give the Royals' bullpen some length behind opener Steven Cruz. Spence has appeared in two games for Kansas City this season, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits and six walks with just four strikeouts across eight innings. He's operated as a starter with Omaha.
JUNE 26 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to Triple-A The Royals optioned Spence to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday.
Impact The 28-year-old was called up to make a spot start Monday against the Nationals, and he'll return to Omaha after surrendering six runs across four innings. Spencer has given up six runs in both of his big-league appearances this season and has also struggled to a 6.54 ERA across 42.2 innings at Triple-A.

Flops in spot start Spence (0-1) took the loss Monday against the Nationals, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk in four innings. He struck out one.
Impact Making his first major-league start of 2026, Spence was mostly ineffective Monday. The 28-year-old right-hander has now given up six runs in four innings during both of his big-league outings this year, posting a 4:6 K:BB in the process. It's possible that Seth Lugo (concussion) will be ready to come off the injured list and take his next turn in Kansas City's rotation versus the Cardinals over the weekend, so Spence could soon be heading back to Triple-A Omaha following a spot start.

García and Crews key 5-run 5th inning as Nationals beat Royals 7-3

Luis García Jr. hit a go-ahead single, Dylan Crews added a three-run homer and the Washington Nationals scored five times in the fifth inning to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3
JUNE 16 • Associated Press
Recalled before Monday's start The Royals recalled Spence from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.
Impact Spence will get the start Monday on the road against the Nationals. The right-hander permitted six runs over four innings in his lone appearance in the majors this season and has turned in a 6.54 ERA in 10 starts at Triple-A Omaha. Spence could earn additional turns in the rotation if things go well Monday.
JUNE 15 • ROTOWIRE
Drawing start for Royals The Royals are listing Spence as their scheduled starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Nationals.
Impact Spence is getting the first turn to fill in for the injured Seth Lugo (concussion). The 28-year-old has not had a great 2026 campaign, getting torched for six runs over four innings in his lone appearance in the majors and posting a 6.54 ERA in 10 starts at Triple-A Omaha. Nevertheless, with Lugo, Cole Ragans (elbow) and Kris Bubic (elbow/shoulder) all facing uncertain timetables, Spence has a chance to stick around with the big club.
JUNE 15 • ROTOWIRE
Heading back to Triple-A The Royals optioned Spence to Triple-A Omaha on Sunday.
Impact Spence wasn't going to be available for at least a few days after he yielded six earned runs on four hits and five walks while covering four innings and tossing 84 pitches in long relief during Saturday's 13-4 loss to the Yankees, so Kansas City will send him to the minors in exchange for a fresh arm. Mason Black was recalled from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move and will give the Royals another right-handed arm capable of covering multiple innings out of the bullpen.

Recalled from Omaha The Royals recalled Spence from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Impact Spence gave up eight earned runs over seven innings during spring training but looked much better during his first start at Triple-A, tossing five shutout innings while allowing four hits and zero walks. Now back in the big leagues, the 27-year-old righty will presumably work in a long relief role, replacing Luinder Avila.
APRIL 9 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Omaha The Royals optioned Spence to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.
Impact The Athletics traded Spence to Kansas City in February, and after surrendering eight earned runs over seven innings during spring training, he will report to Triple-A to begin his tenure with his new organization. The right-hander owns a 4.77 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 236 innings in his big-league career and may be recalled later in the season to provide long-relief help.

Royals acquire RHP Mitch Spence from the Athletics for RHP A.J. Causey

The Kansas City Royals have acquired right-hander Mitch Spence from the Athletics for right-hander A
FEBRUARY 12 • Associated Press
Traded to Royals The Athletics traded Spence to the Royals on Thursday in exchange for A.J. Causey.
Impact After being DFA'd by the A's on Tuesday, Spence will recapture a 40-man roster spot by moving to Kansas City. The 27-year-old reliever turned in a 5.10 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 84.2 innings last season and will be in the running for a spot in the Royals' Opening Day bullpen. He has two minor-league options remaining, however, so there is a chance he opens the year at Triple-A Omaha instead. Alec Marsh (shoulder) was placed on the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.
FEBRUARY 12 • ROTOWIRE
Pushed off 40-man The Athletics designated Spence for assignment Tuesday.
Impact With Scott Barlow and Aaron Civale officially signing one-year deals with the A's on Tuesday, Spence and Grant Holman (finger) will both lose their place on the 40-man roster. Spence made 32 appearances (eight starts) with the Athletics in 2025, turning in a 5.10 ERA and 1.44 WHIP to go with a 66:26 K:BB through 84.2 innings. Assuming he clears waivers, the 27-year-old righty will open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Rough outing vs. Pirates Spence (3-6) took the loss Sunday against the Pirates, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out one.
Impact Spence struggled out of the gate Sunday, allowing a pair of two-out runs in the opening inning before the Pirates added on with a two-run homer in the second. It's the first start and second appearance for Spence since he was recalled from Triple-A earlier this month. Overall, the right-hander sports a 4.96 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP and 65 strikeouts across 81.2 innings this year.

Set to take on Pirates Spence will start Sunday's game against the Pirates, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact Spence threw 3.2 innings out of the bullpen in an appearance Tuesday, but he'll make at least one spot start Sunday. He's worked as a traditional starter for nearly the entire season, so he should be able to pitch deep into the game if he's effective.
