INJURIES

Handling bulk-relief role Sunday Mikolas is expected to be deployed in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Richard Lovelady in Sunday's game against the Orioles, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact After Mikolas started in each of his last three appearances, the Nationals are opting to bring him out of the bullpen for the fourth time this season Sunday. Expect Lovelady to cover the first inning or two of the series finale before giving way to Mikolas, who has accrued a 4.09 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB in 11 innings over his prior three relief outings.

Nationals host the Orioles, look to extend home win streak

The Washington Nationals, on a four-game home winning streak, host the Baltimore Orioles

Early exit in no-decision Mikolas didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 10-4 win over the Reds, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out two.
Impact The veteran righty got plenty of offensive support on a night when the Nationals launched six home runs, but he couldn't stick around long enough to benefit from it as Mikolas got the hook after 71 inefficient pitches (45 strikes). Injuries to other pitchers would seem to be the only thing keeping Mikolas in the rotation at this point, as he's completed five innings only twice in nine outings (six starts and three bulk relief appearances). He'll take a 7.00 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 24:13 K:BB through 36 innings into his next trip to the mound, which is set to come at home this weekend against the Orioles.

Earns first win of season Mikolas (1-3) earned the win Wednesday against the Twins after allowing two runs on three hits across 5.1 innings, fanning three.
Impact Mikolas delivered his best outing of the season Wednesday, as he pitched into the sixth inning for the first time in 2026, and now he's allowed two or fewer runs in four of his last six starts. The long balls remain an issue, as he's given up nine across 32.2 innings, but at least he reduced his ERA to 7.44 with a 1.53 WHIP. Mikolas has a long way to go before being even worthy of being considered a streaming option in most formats, but this was a step in the right direction. He's scheduled to make his next start at Cincinnati next week.

Another short outing in no-decision Mikolas didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Mets, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk in four innings. He struck out three.
Impact The 37-year-old right-hander continues to struggle to provide the Nationals with length. Thursday marked his sixth consecutive appearance with fewer than five innings, and Mikolas has still been unable to fan more than four in any of his first seven outings. He has a hideous 8.23 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 19:11 K:BB over 27.1 frames, so Mikolas doesn't shape up as a recommended fantasy option in his next scheduled outing against the Twins.

Another HR allowed Friday Mikolas didn't factor into the decision Friday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout across 3.2 innings.
Impact Mikolas once again worked as the bulk reliever behind opener PJ Poulin, who went 1.2 scoreless innings. Mikolas threw 51 pitches and generated just three whiffs, surrendering Munetaka Murakami's league-leading 11th home run along the way. The right-hander has now given up seven long balls in 23.1 innings. He'll carry an 8.49 ERA and 16:10 K:BB into his next outing.

Likely primary pitcher Friday Mikolas is available to serve as the primary pitcher for the Nationals in Friday's contest against the White Sox, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact PJ Poulin will be the team's opener, and he has drawn the opener assignment in each of Mikolas' last two bulk relief outings. It will likely be the same setup Friday, though the Nats will also have Riley Cornelio available if they want to go that route. Mikolas is coming off his best appearance of the season, having tossed four shutout frames against the Giants.

White Sox host the Nationals on home losing streak

The Chicago White Sox look to end their six-game home slide with a victory over the Washington Nationals
APRIL 24 • Associated Press
Sharp as primary pitcher Sunday Mikolas didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's win over the Giants, allowing four hits and a walk over four scoreless innings of relief. He struck out four.
Impact The veteran right-hander worked as a bulk reliever, taking the mound after PJ Poulin recorded the first two outs for the Nationals, and Mikolas just missed collecting his first win of the season -- Washington scored all three of its runs right after he was lifted after 61 pitches (40 strikes) for Andrew Alvarez, who completed a combined shutout. Mikolas still has an ugly 9.15 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB through 19.2 innings over five appearances (three starts) this season, but Sunday's effort was at least encouraging. Mikolas lines up for another favorable matchup, either as a starter or a primary pitcher, next weekend on the road against the White Sox.

Curtis Mead homers, Andrew Alvarez shines in relief as Nationals blank Giants 3-0 to avoid sweep

Curtis Mead hit a two-run homer, Andrew Alvarez worked 4 1/3 sharp innings in relief and the Washington Nationals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-0 to avoid a three-game sweep
APRIL 19 • Associated Press
Set for another bulk-relief outing Mikolas is scheduled to work in bulk relief behind opening pitcher PJ Poulin in Sunday's game against the Giants, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact The Nationals will pair Mikolas with Poulin for a second straight turn through the rotation, as the former had previously pitched behind the latter in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Pirates. After turning in a 12.41 ERA, 2.35 WHIP and 11:7 K:BB in 12.1 innings over his three starts to begin the season, Mikolas didn't fare dramatically better coming out of the bullpen, as the Pirates tagged him for three earned runs on three hits and two walks across 3.1 innings. Despite the favorable matchup against a weak Giants offense, Mikolas hasn't provided reason for fantasy managers to include him in lineups with any level of confidence.

APRIL 18 • Associated Press
Roughed up again Tuesday Mikolas didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Pirates, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks with no strikeouts across 3.1 innings.
Impact After starting each of his first three appearances this season, Mikolas worked behind opener PJ Poulin on Tuesday. Poulin went one inning, allowing a solo home run with one strikeout before giving way to Mikolas in the bottom of the second. Mikolas worked an efficient first two innings before the wheels came off a bit in the bottom of the fourth, walking the first two batters before a double and groundout turned into two runs. He later gave up a solo shot to Joey Bart and was pulled after 49 pitches. Mikolas has an ugly 11.49 ERA and 11:9 K:BB across 15.2 innings. He's surrendered a league-high 20 runs and six homers. It's fair to wonder how much longer Mikolas will remain part of Washington's rotation.

CJ Abrams has a home run in a three-hit game to lead the Nationals over the Pirates 5-4

CJ Abrams went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs as the Washington Nationals held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4
APRIL 15 • Associated Press
Working behind opener Tuesday Mikolas is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher PJ Poulin in Tuesday's game in Pittsburgh, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Impact The Pirates typically roll out a starting lineup featuring two left-handed hitters (Oneil Cruz and Brandon Lowe) with OPSes north of 1.000 in the top two spots, so the Nationals will hope to neutralize them or force Pittsburgh to alter its batting order by having the left-handed Poulin begin the game. Poulin is unlikely to cover more than an inning or two before giving way to Mikolas, who should get a softer landing to begin his appearance by facing the back end of the Pittsburgh lineup. Mikolas had struggled mightily through his first three starts with Washington, giving up 19 runs (17 earned) on 22 hits and seven walks over 12.1 innings.

APRIL 14 • Associated Press
Losing ways continue Mikolas (0-3) took the loss Wednesday against the Cardinals, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in three innings. He struck out three.
Impact Facing his former club, Mikolas didn't last very long to add to his woes in the early going. The veteran right-hander had coughed up a staggering 15 runs across his first 9.1 innings prior to Wednesday, and the Nationals decided that they'd seen enough following just 55 pitches from Mikolas on Wednesday. A relatively manageable assignment against the Pirates awaits Mikolas for his next start, but his 12.41 ERA, 2.35 WHIP and 11:7 K:BB make him a fantasy option to avoid until he gains some form of traction.
