Struggling this spring Mayers has gotten into four Cactus League games thus far, pitching three innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five.
Impact In addition to giving up too many hits, Mayers was literally hit by a batted ball in early March, though he turned out to be fine despite having to leave that game. While the slow start to spring is mildly concerning, the right-hander figures to begin the campaign as one of the Angels' top setup options after posting a 2.10 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB across 30 innings in 2020.

Impact The 29-year-old took a major step during the shortened campaign and worked in high-leverage for the Angels with a 2.10 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB while recording two saves and five holds. Raisel Iglesias is poised to operate as the closer, but Mayers should enter spring training as the favorite for the setup role.

Notches second straight save Mayers earned the save against San Diego on Tuesday, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings in which he gave up one hit and one walk while striking out two.
Impact Mayers was brought in to protect a two-run lead with the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning and retired two of the three batters he faced to keep the Padres off the scoreboard. He then allowed a leadoff single in the ninth before inducing a double-play groundout and a strikeout to close out the win. It was the second straight multi-inning save for Mayers, who had been used primarily in a setup role prior to this week. He has not allowed a run in nearly a month and has posted a minuscule 0.35 ERA over his last 24 appearances covering 26 innings.

The 28-year-old Mayers has walked just two walks while striking out 14 in his last 11.2 innings. He has a 1.80 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 36:6 K:BB as well as four holds in 25 innings this year.

Cutter key to success Mayers credits his success this season to the addition of a cutter to his arsenal, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Impact Per Statcast, Mayers had never thrown a cutter in the majors prior to 2020, but he appears to have picked up the pitch rapidly given that he has thrown it 25.7 percent of the time this season. The right-hander picked up the grip on the cutter from an Instagram picture of a baseball marked by Mariano Rivera and subsequently recognized the fit in his arsenal. "It seemed very simple," Mayers said. "Kind of really fit my mindset, where I just kind of grabbed the ball and let it rip, and it had some cut to it. And so I just kind of tinkered with that, but basically that's how it started." The results so far have been positive -- opposing hitters are batting .174 against Mayers' cutter this season, and he has posted a career-best 2.33 ERA and 0.93 WHIP across 19.1 innings overall.
