INJURIES

Cut loose by Philadelphia The Phillies released Castillo on Aug. 12.
Impact Castillo logged a 4.43 ERA over 20.1 innings at the big-league level with the Royals in 2023, but he didn't make any appearances for the Phillies in 2024 after being added to the organization's 40-man roster over the offseason. The right-hander was outrighted off the roster earlier this month and was eventually cut loose after compiling a 7.62 ERA over 52 innings this season between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Double-A Reading.

Clears waivers The Phillies outrighted Castillo to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday after he cleared waivers.
Impact Castillo no longer possesses a spot on the Phillies' 40-man roster, but he'll remain in the organization as pitching depth at the Triple-A level. Between stops with Lehigh Valley and Double-A Reading this season, Castillo has posted a 7.62 ERA over 52 innings.
AUGUST 12, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Dumped from 40-man roster The Phillies designated Castillo for assignment Friday.
Impact The 25-year-old was sent to Triple-A Lehigh Valley late in spring training after being claimed off waivers from the Red Sox, but he's now been jettisoned from the Phillies' 40-man roster. Castillo struggled to an 8.37 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 37:24 K:BB over 42 innings (10 starts) at Triple-A.

Sent back to minors Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Friday.
Impact Castillo allowed to runs over 3.1 innings during his most recent stint in the majors. The Royals will announce a corresponding move prior to their series opener Friday against the Cubs.
AUGUST 18, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled by Royals Castillo was recalled from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.
Impact Castillo has thrown 17 innings as a long reliever for the Royals this season, holding his own with a 4.24 ERA despite a low 13.7 percent strikeout rate. He's likely limited to a low-leverage role unless he can start to miss more bats. Jonathan Heasley was optioned in a corresponding move.
AUGUST 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
Impact He's clearing out to make room for Zack Greinke, who has returned from the injured list to start Thursday. Castillo holds a 4.24 ERA over five appearances with the Royals this season as a multi-inning reliever.
JULY 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Back with KC The Royals recalled Castillo from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday.
Impact Castillo was sent to Omaha in late May and has since posted a 3.52 ERA and 0.89 WHIP to go with a 28:5 K:BB through 38.1 innings. He's been used primarily as a starter in the minors but figures to serve as a multi-inning reliever while with the Royals. Collin Snider was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Optioned to Triple-A Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha by the Royals on Tuesday.
Impact Castillo was needed for 4.2 innings of relief Sunday, so he probably wasn't going to be available for at least another day or two. Nick Wittgren will take his roster spot.
MAY 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles as long reliever Castillo (0-1) took the loss in Sunday's 5-2 loss against the White Sox. He allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out one over 4.2 innings.
Impact Castillo followed Carlos Hernandez on Sunday, who pitched the first two frames as an opener. After a strong start to the season with a 2.89 ERA and eight strikeouts through 9.1 innings, Castillo was knocked around by the White Sox. He was tagged for a solo homer by Luis Robert in the fourth, then gave up three runs in the fifth inning as Chicago took a 4-2 lead. Though Castillo has gotten a few looks as a long reliever, his 5.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 5.79 K/9 leaves him firmly outside of fantasy considerations.
MAY 22, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Will follow opener Sunday Castillo will pitch following opener Carlos Hernandez against the White Sox on Sunday, Pete Grathoff of The Kansas City Star reports.
Impact Castillo will get a chance to work multiple innings following Hernandez on Sunday against Chicago. In three appearances thus far with the Royals, Castillo has registered a 2.89 ERA over 9.1 innings, but he has walked six while accumulating a 1.50 WHIP.
MAY 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled from Omaha Kansas City recalled Castillo from Triple-A Omaha on Friday.
Impact Castillo is able to be brought up just three days after being optioned to Omaha because Brad Keller (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list. Castillo could operate as a bulk reliever while he's with the Royals.
MAY 19, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Omaha Castillo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday.
Impact Castillo has been solid as a multi-inning reliever for Kansas City, logging a 2.89 ERA through 9.1 innings over three appearances. In spite of his success, he will return to Omaha and be replaced on the MLB roster by Jackson Kowar.
MAY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Works in bulk relief Castillo allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Brewers. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Castillo worked as a bulk reliever behind opener Josh Taylor. The damage against Castillo amounted to an Owen Miller solo home run and a Tyrone Taylor RBI single. Through two long-relief outings, Castillo owns a 3.86 ERA, but it comes with a 1.86 WHIP and 5:5 K:BB through seven innings. Considering he had a 9:10 K:BB through 24.1 innings with Triple-A Omaha prior to his call-up, it appears the right-hander could still benefit from some time working on his control in the minors.
MAY 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Joins big club The Royals recalled Castillo from Triple-A Omaha ahead of Sunday's game against the Athletics.
Impact Castillo will provide the Royals with a fresh arm capable of covering multiple innings out of the bullpen after Kansas City needed six relievers to cover 8.2 frames between the first two games of the series with Oakland. The Royals still plan on developing Castillo as a starter, so he'll likely be in line for only a brief stay with Kansas City before returning to Triple-A and slotting back into the Omaha rotation.
MAY 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Omaha The Royals optioned Castillo to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.
Impact Castillo had been struggling mightily in Cactus League action this spring and can now be ruled out for an Opening Day roster spot in Kansas City. He'll presumably work out of the rotation at Omaha.
MARCH 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Having trouble in spring Castillo has allowed seven earned runs over 5.2 innings across four Cactus League appearances this spring.
Impact Castillo started spring training in the mix for a spot in the rotation, but it doesn't look like he's earned such a role through his performance. He allowed two runs on a hit and a walk over one innings in Tuesday's game versus the Mariners. Castillo is just 23 years old, so it's completely reasonable to assume he could use a little more time at the Triple-A level before making the jump full-time to the majors.

OCTOBER 2, 2022 • MLB.COM
Shelled in loss Castillo (0-2) took the loss Sunday in Cleveland, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings.
Impact Six of the seven runs against Castillo came in the second inning as the Guardians sent nine batters to the plate and Will Brennan and Josh Naylor each launched three-run homers. Castillo figured it out after that and retired the final 10 batters he faced but, at that point, the damage had already been done. The 23-year-old was acquired from the Blue Jays before the trade deadline and has struggled mightily for the Royals, compiling a 9.16 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 17:10 K:BB in 18.2 innings across five appearances.
OCTOBER 2, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
One more start to close out 2022 Castillo is listed as the Royals' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game in Cleveland.
Impact Through his first three starts as a member of the Royals after coming over in a trade with the Blue Jays on Aug. 2, Castillo has logged a 5.93 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 13.2 innings. He'll get one final chance Sunday to try and end the season on a high note, but Castillo will still likely have to compete for a spot in the Royals' Opening Day rotation next spring regardless of how he fares against the Guardians.
SEPTEMBER 29, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Hit hard in no-decision Castillo allowed six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four in four innings during Sunday's win over the Mariners. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact Castillo was relatively effective over his first 11 appearances (four starts) in the majors this year, posting a 2.97 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 30.1 innings prior to Sunday's start. He gave up just one run over the first four innings of Sunday's matchup but struggled mightily in the top of the fifth inning prior to his removal. It's not yet clear whether Castillo will make another start for the Royals over the final week and a half of the regular season.
