Sent to MiLB camp The Tigers optioned Manning to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Impact The 2016 first-round pick had been given the opportunity to compete for a rotation spot this spring, but since the Tigers have yet to start his MLB service clock, the prevailing expectation was that he would begin the year in the minors. Tuesday's transaction confirms that will be the case, though Manning could still appear in Grapefruit League games as he looks to build back up after a forearm strain cost him time in 2020. He'll likely remain at the Tigers' spring-training facility in Lakeland, Fla. for another month before reporting to Toledo when the Triple-A season begins in May.

Working on new pitch Manning has been developing a new, sharp breaking ball, which could be classed as either a slider or a cutter, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Impact The 23-year-old righty already had quite a high ceiling, and the existence of a third offspeed pitch to pair with his plus curveball and above-average changeup could potentially push it even higher. It's of course no guarantee the pitch works as well as Manning hopes, however, and he'll come with question marks this season even if it does, as he could have been on a path to debut last year but was shut down with a strained right forearm. While he feels 100 percent now, it's certainly possible the issue returns.

Impact The Tigers protected the right-hander from the Rule 5 draft in November by placing him on the 40-man roster. While a lot of plans can evolve leading up to and during spring training, Manning currently appears to be a long shot to break camp with the big club. With that being said, the 22-year-old figures to have a solid chance of making his major-league debut at some point in 2021.
