Cole expected to start as Yankees host the Indians

The Yankees will roll out Gerrit Cole to the mound Sunday and the Indians will give Eli Morgan the start

Sent down after defeat Gil (1-1) was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Saturday's game against Cleveland. He was charged with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on three...
Impact The 23-year-old struggled with his command and threw only 50 of 88 pitches in the zone, though he still induced 13 swinging strikes. Gil still has a strong 2.88 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB across 25 innings this season, but he'll head back to the minors since the Yankees need only four starters for the near future thanks to having two scheduled off days in the next nine days.

Yankees Notebook: Luis Gil impressing teammates, Loaisiga starts throwing program “He’s got something different about him, I don’t know. I can’t tell what it is,” Aaron Judge said of Gil.
SEPTEMBER 17, 2021 • MCALL.COM
Pitches six innings Gil tossed six innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out eight in the win over the Twins on Monday. He did not factor into the game's decision.
Impact The 23-year-old struggled with the long ball in this one, surrendering his first three of the season. He was much more effective with his strike zone command Monday than in previous outings, only walking one after issuing 14 walks in 19 innings prior. Gil now owns a 2.88 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 25 innings on the year. He's projected to start next at home this Saturday versus Cleveland.

Twins' Gant leaves after 12 pitches vs Yanks with abs strain

Minnesota Twins starter John Gant lasted just 12 pitches against the New York Yankees, leaving after straining his lower abdomen
SEPTEMBER 13, 2021 • Associated Press
Draws another start Gil will start Monday's game against the Twins.
Impact Gil initially looked like he would only be making a spot start when the Yankees recalled him from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last week, but he'll end up making a second turn through the rotation after Jameson Taillon (ankle) was placed on the injured list a day after the rookie's outing. After opening his big-league career with 18 strikeouts in 15.2 scoreless innings in his first three starts with the Yankees, Gil took a step back in the Sept. 8 loss to the Blue Jays, lasting only 3.1 innings while allowing one run and issuing a whopping seven walks. Even in his prior three starts, Gil was still walking batters at an elevated 10.9 percent rate, so he'll still carry some risk as a season-long streamer or DFS play in a more favorable matchup versus Minnesota.

SEPTEMBER 12, 2021 • Associated Press
Yankees' Luis Gil has been so good, it's easy to forget he's still learning Gil’s big league ERA jumped from 0.00 to 1.42 Wednesday night.
SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 • MCALL.COM
Control deserts him Wednesday Gil didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on one hit and seven walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out six.
Impact Recalled from Triple-A earlier in the day, Gil looked nothing like the pitcher who didn't allow a run in any of his first three big-league starts. He issued as many free passes Wednesday as he had in those three outings combined, tossing only 47 of 91 pitches for strikes before getting the hook, but the Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the fifth to help him escape his first loss. With Gerrit Cole (hamstring) not 100 percent, Gil's chances of sticking around in the rotation are a little better, but if he can't rein in the walks the Yankees will have to look to other options.

Guerrero, streaking Jays drop sliding Yanks from top WC spot

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 41st home run and the streaking Toronto Blue Jays knocked the slumping Yankees out of the AL’s top wild-card spot, beating New York 6-3
SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 • Associated Press
Officially recalled Wednesday Gil was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead of Wednesday's start against the Blue Jays.
Impact Gil was sent down in mid-August and posted a 2.81 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 16 innings across his last three starts in the minors. The right-hander has tossed 15.2 scoreless innings in three major-league starts in 2021, and he'll be in contention to remain with the Yankees as a starter or high-leverage reliever if he performs well once again Wednesday.

On track to join rotation Wednesday Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Gil will likely be called from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays in New York, Lindsey Adler of The Ath...
Impact Nestor Cortes had been lined to start Wednesday's game, but Boone didn't suggest that Cortes nor any other member of the rotation would be replaced to make room for Gil. Instead, look for the Yankees to deploy a six-man rotation for at least this week, affording an additional day of rest for each member of the starting staff amid a heavy schedule of games. With another solid outing Wednesday, Gil could make a case for a more permanent stay with the big club, either as a starter or a high-leverage reliever. Over his first three big-league starts, Gil didn't allow a run over 15.2 innings while posting an 18:7 K:BB.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Won't start Monday Gil won't start Monday's game against Atlanta, Sweeny Murti of Sports Radio 66 WFAN reports.
Impact Gil was expected to start Sunday's series finale against the Twins before the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The Yankees will remain on turn in the rotation rather than recalling the right-hander, so Jordan Montgomery will start Monday, while Andrew Heaney will take the mound Tuesday.
AUGUST 23, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sunday's contest called off Gil and the Yankees won't play Sunday against the Twins after the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
Impact Gil was slated to be recalled to start Sunday's series finale against Minnesota, but the game won't be played since Hurricane Henri is forecasted to hit the East Coast. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will start Monday's series opener against Atlanta.

Likely to start for big club Sunday Manager Aaron Boone said that Gil is likely to be recalled to start Sunday against the Twins, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Impact The announcement from Boone comes as little surprise given that Gil has yet to give up a run in any of his three big-league starts. He was sent back to Triple-A after allowing three hits across 4.2 scoreless innings in his start against Boston on Tuesday. If he does indeed take the ball Sunday, Jordan Montgomery's next start will be pushed back to Monday.

Sent down after strong start Gil was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox. He started Game 2 and took a no-decision after allowing three hits with fou...
Impact Gil had a chance to pick up his second big-league victory, but he was pulled during the fifth inning after loading the bases with two outs. He served as the 27th man for the twin bill, so he could rejoin the Yankees for another start quickly despite the demotion. However, New York's rotation has recently been fortified by the returns of Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery from the COVID-19 injured list. Still, Gil has pitched well enough that he should receive another major-league chance before long.
