Fans eight in no-decision
Gil (0-0) didn't factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out eight.
Impact
Gil's poor command came back to bite him Sunday, allowing a single to George Springer and then issuing three straight free passes -- one hit-by-pitch -- to bring Springer around to score. Other than his walk problem (seven walks in nine innings), Gil has been great to start 2024, owning a 3.00 ERA with 14 strikeouts through two starts, both of which have come against dangerous offenses. He's lined up to face the Guardians in Cleveland for his next projected start.

Wins job as fifth starter
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Gil will open the year as the team's fifth starter, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact
A slot in the rotation became available when it was announced that Gerrit Cole (elbow) would miss extended time at the start of the campaign, and Gil was among a group of hurlers competing for the role in spring training. The right-hander posted an excellent 2.87 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB over 15.2 Grapefruit League innings and drew positive comments from rival scouts, so his spot in the Opening Day rotation is well-deserved. Gil has made seven big-league appearances (all starts) in his career, posting a 3.78 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 43:21 K:BB across 33.1 frames. He should get several turns in the rotation to try to establish himself with Cole not expected to be able to return until at least late May or early June.

Lit up for four runs in rehab start
Gil (elbow) tossed two innings and struck out three while giving up four earned runs on three hits and two walks in his rehab start Thursday for Single-A Tampa.
Impact
Gil made his second appearance at Tampa after striking out three over another two-inning start in his first rehab outing Sept. 1. The right-hander's fastball velocity is reportedly sitting around the same levels it had prior to him undergoing Tommy John surgery last May, but like most pitchers returning from a major elbow injury, Gil's command and control has been lacking a bit thus far during his rehab assignment. He'll eventually shift his rehab assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before potentially making his return from the 60-day injured list before the end of the season. The Yankees envision Gil serving as a starter over the long haul, but if he makes any appearances for the big club in 2023, he'll likely be doing so in a relief role.

Fastball velocity back
Gil's (elbow) fastball was clocked at 98 mph during his first rehab outing Friday for Single-A Tampa, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
Impact
Gil allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three batters over two innings. His fastball averaged 96 mph in the majors in 2021, so it's good to hear his velocity is all the way back after having not pitched since May 2022 due to Tommy John surgery.

Starting rehab assignment
Gil (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Tampa on Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Impact
It will be his first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery last May. While it's possible the Yankees could activate Gil later this month, the most important thing at this point is getting him built back up so he has a chance to contribute as a starter next season. The righty would seem to be a prime candidate for the Arizona Fall League and/or winter ball.

Throws live batting practice
Gil (elbow) threw live batting practice Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Impact
It's the first time Gil has faced hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery last May. The young right-hander has a chance to help the Yankees at some point in the second half, although he might not have enough time to be built back up to contribute as a starter.

Throws bullpen session
Gil (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Impact
It's the first time throwing off a mound since last year's Tommy John surgery. Gil had the operation last May and hopes to become an option for the Yankees' rotation or bullpen at some point in the second half.

Goes on 60-day IL
The Yankees placed Gil (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Impact
Gil resumed tossing bullpen sessions in the latter stages of spring training, but he'll still require more than two months to complete his throwing progression plus a minor-league rehab assignment while he works his way back from May 2022 Tommy John surgery. His move to the 60-day injured list won't affect his recovery timeline and affords the Yankees some added flexibility with the 40-man roster in the meantime.

Progresses to bullpens
Gil (elbow) recently began throwing bullpen sessions, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports.
Impact
Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of last year and is about 10 months into his rehab. He hasn't yet faced hitters, but the fact that he's tossing bullpens suggests that the right-hander hasn't had any setbacks. Gil isn't expected to be ready to return to game action until at least July.
