Takes loss in 2026 debut Gil (0-1) took the loss against the Rays on Friday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two across four innings.
Impact Gil was handed an early 2-0 lead thanks to his teammates, but he quickly lost the lead after yielding a two-run homer to Yandy Diaz. Gil gave up another run in the third and wasn't able to receive enough run support to avoid the loss. He was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier in the day to serve as the Yankees' No. 5 starting option after the team initially went with a four-man rotation to open the season. Gil is projected to start next week at home against the Angels.

Pitcher Cade Winquest's Yankees career could end without getting into a regular-season game

Cade Winquest’s Yankees career could end without him getting into a regular-season game
APRIL 10 • Associated Press
Recalled ahead of Friday's start The Yankees recalled Gil from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
Impact Gil was left out of the Yankees' Opening Day rotation as the club initially operated with a four-man setup, but he's now up to fill in the No. 5 spot and will start Friday's game versus the Rays. The 27-year-old miss much of last season with a lat strain, finishing with a 3.32 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 41:33 K:BB across 57 regular-season innings covering 11 starts. Gil will need to pitch well to keep a rotation spot once Carlos Rodon (elbow/hamstring) and Gerrit Cole (elbow) are ready.
APRIL 10 • ROTOWIRE
Set to join rotation Friday The Yankees will recall Gil from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Friday's game against the Rays, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Impact The Yankees' early-season schedule has allowed them to use a four-man rotation thus far, but the need for a fifth starter has arrived and Gil will be the one to fill it. Gil missed much of the 2025 campaign with a lat strain before collecting a 3.32 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 41:33 K:BB across 57 regular-season innings covering 11 starts. The 27-year-old showed good velocity during spring training and posted a 24:5 K:BB in 19.1 frames, but throwing strikes has been a consistent issue for him in the majors and minors. With Carlos Rodon (elbow/hamstring) and Gerrit Cole (elbow) due back in the coming weeks, Gil will need to get off to a good start if he wants to retain a spot in the Yankees' rotation.

Optioned to Triple-A The Yankees optioned Gil to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
Impact With multiple off days, the Yankees will operate with a four-man rotation early in the season. Gil will be recalled once a fifth starter is needed April 11 against the Rays. The right-hander had a strong Grapefruit League showing with a 24:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings.

MARCH 24 • MLB.COM
Heading to minors Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Tuesday that Gil will be optioned to the minor leagues to start the regular season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact New York is beginning the season with a four-man rotation since a fifth starter isn't needed until April 11 in Tampa Bay, and Gil will stay stretched out in the minors rather than sticking in the majors as a bullpen piece. The right-hander missed the first four months of 2025 due to a lat strain but returned for 11 regular-season starts down the stretch, posting a 3.32 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 41:33 K:BB across 57 innings. Gil surrendered 10 earned runs (including six homers) with a 24:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings during spring training, so he'll begin the minor-league season with decent momentum despite the incoming demotion.
