INJURIES

Shifts rehab to Triple-A Campusano (thumb) moved his rehab assignment to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday and went 3-for-6 with a double and two runs in his first two games with the affiliate.
Impact Campusano, who is working his way back from left thumb surgery, appeared in three games in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League earlier this month before shifting his rehab assignment to Triple-A. He'll likely remain with El Paso for at least a few more games to get his timing back at the plate following a two-plus-month-long layoff from action, but once activated, Campusano could get a look with the Padres as the top understudy to Gary Sanchez. The Padres' current No. 2 catcher, Austin Nola, owns a .143/.260/.190 slash line (37 wRC+) over 150 plate appearances this season and still has two minor-league options remaining.

Begins rehab assignment Campusano (thumb) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday in the Arizona Complex League, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Campusano is recovered from May 12 surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb and could return to the Padres' active major-league roster after the All-Star break as an option at catcher, first base and DH.
JULY 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Catching bullpen session Saturday Campusano (thumb) will catch a bullpen session Saturday and has been taking full swings at the plate, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Campusano isn't expected back until mid-July, but he seems to be recovering nicely from the thumb surgery he underwent May 12. The 24-year-old backstop was slashing .238/.227/.429 through 22 plate appearances prior to injury and figures to head out on a rehab assignment before returning to the active roster.
JUNE 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Moved to 60-day IL San Diego transferred Campusano (thumb) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list on Friday.
Impact Campusano underwent surgery May 12 to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb and had already been ruled out through at least mid-July. Alfonso Rivas will take over the vacated 40-man roster spot.

Impact Campusano will likely now be held out until after the All-Star break. The backstop appeared to be making positive progress after beginning to catch pitchers last weekend, but ultimately the Padres decided to have him undergo the procedure now with a chance to return in the summer. With Campusano out, Austin Nola and Brett Sullivan should continue to share catching duties.
MAY 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Begins catching pitches Campusano began catching pitches Friday for the first time since he went on the injured list, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact It's a significant step forward for Campusano, who has been on the shelf since mid-April because of a left thumb sprain. He was cleared to start swinging a bat earlier this week and seems to be tracking toward a return to the Padres sometime in mid-May. Austin Nola and Brett Sullivan are currently serving as the catching tandem for San Diego.
MAY 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Not yet playing catch Campusano's injured left thumb is still in a soft cast, and it isn't known when the backstop will resume playing catch, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Campusano landed on the 10-day injured list April 17 as a result of spraining his thumb while catching a bullpen session. Though X-rays came back negative, the Padres are being cautious and waiting until the thumb is close to 100 percent before allowing Campusano to resume catching, according to manager Bob Melvin. Campusano is eligible to come off the IL on April 27, but it appears unlikely that he'll be ready to return by then.
APRIL 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on IL due to thumb sprain Campusano was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb sprain by the Padres on Tuesday.
Impact Campusano jammed his thumb while catching a bullpen session, and the swelling hasn't reduced enough to play at this point. Brett Sullivan will remain the backup catcher while Brandon Dixon is recalled from El Paso to take Campusano's place on the roster.

Nursing jammed thumb Campusano had X-rays on his jammed thumb come back negative Sunday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact The 24-year-old apparently suffered the injury a couple days ago while catching a bullpen session, and he's dealing with some significant swelling. It's unclear if Campusano will require a trip to the injured list, but Brett Sullivan has joined the club to potentially serve as catching depth.
APRIL 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Slams first homer Campusano went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Friday in a loss to Milwaukee.
Impact The Padres fell behind early and never came close to catching up, but Campusano provided a small spark with his solo homer to left field in the fifth inning. The long ball was the first of the season for the 24-year-old, who is working in a backup role behind Austin Nola. Campusano is slashing .227/.429/.656 through 22 plate appearances.
APRIL 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Not in lineup Thursday Campusano is not in the lineup Thursday against the Brewers.
Impact Campusano has out-hit Austin Nola in the early going and should be able to carve out more playing time if that continues, but Nola is starting at catcher and batting ninth for the Padres in this one.

Padres notes: Luis Campusano seems in line for more time; Matt Williams could return for homestand Balance of playing time could shift for catchers, as Luis Campusano steps up behind plate and Austin Nola struggles at plate
APRIL 12, 2023 • SANDIEGOUNIONTRIBUNE.COM
Collects three hits Tuesday Campusano went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs in Tuesday's 4-2 win against the Mets.
Impact Campusano came into the contest having gone 1-for-11 on the campaign, and the first three-hit game of his career boosted his season average all the way up to .267. The trio of base knocks didn't come cheaply, as all three left Campusano's bat at least 98.5 mph, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Austin Nola has been the clear No. 1 option behind the plate for San Diego this season with eight starts through the team's first 12 games, and he's back in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale. However, Nola is slashing a meager .115/.207/.115 thus far in 2023, so Campusano could start to see more opportunities if the former's offense doesn't pick up.

Flashing power this spring Campusano leads San Diego with three home runs in Cactus League play, and he's slashing .231/.333/.654 with a 4:6 BB:K over 31 plate appearances.
Impact Campusano has only two homers through his first 85 big-league at-bats, but he went deep 14 times in 319 bats in Triple-A last season after hitting 15 long balls each of the previous two full minor-league seasons. Austin Nola (nose) projects to be the Padres' primary catcher to begin the campaign, but Campusano should be his backup and could push for more playing time if he swings the bat well.

MLB 26-and-under power rankings: No. 9 San Diego Padres
On track to play Wednesday Campusano (hamstring) is scheduled to return to the Padres' Cactus League lineup Wednesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Campusano hasn't played in several days because of a hamstring injury, but it sounds like he's almost ready to go. The 24-year-old is competing with Austin Nola for playing time at catcher for San Diego this season. Campusano has hit very well in the minors but has yet to see that production carry over during his brief time in the majors.

The Padres are a fascinating baseball experiment, one that will surely render some type of judgment upon GM A.J. Preller's shoulders.
