Appears headed for Triple-A Campusano is expected to open the season at Triple-A El Paso, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Elias Diaz will be the Padres' primary catcher and non-roster invitee Martin Maldonado looks to be in line to serve as his backup. Campusano will head to El Paso, where he will receive regular playing time as he awaits another opportunity in the majors.
MARCH 24 • ROTOWIRE
Makes impression with homer Sunday Campusano hit a three-run home run in his only at-bat in Sunday's Cactus League loss to the Diamondbacks.
Impact Campusano didn't start the game, but he entered as a defensive replacement at catcher in the seventh inning. The 26-year-old then made the most of his lone plate appearance, smashing a three-run homer to left field in the eighth frame. It was a much-needed big hit for Campusano, who entered Sunday having gone just 3-for-21 this spring. He's competing with Elias Diaz to be San Diego's primary catcher to open the campaign, and Diaz has also struggled at the dish in Cactus League play with a 3-for-22 line. With that in mind, Campusano could turn the competition in his favor if he's able to positively build upon Sunday's performance during what's left of spring training.
MARCH 17 • ROTOWIRE
Role for 2025 uncertain Campusano may be trailing Elias Diaz in the battle to be San Diego's No. 1 catcher, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Following the departure of Kyle Higashioka to Texas in the offseason, San Diego's primary catcher role for 2025 appeared to be wide open. That's still the case, as none of the Padres' backstops has hit well this spring. Campusano has gone just 2-for-16 so far, while Diaz is 3-for-18. Meanwhile, San Diego's other backstop options, Brett Sullivan (2-for-15) and Martin Maldonado (0-for-13), have been equally unproductive. Cassavell speculates that Diaz's reputation as a strong defender could have him leading the race to start on Opening Day, though the Padres don't appear to have made a decision in that regard to this point. Campusano finished last season at Triple-A and has one minor-league option remaining, so it's not certain that he'll even break camp with the big club.

Gets $1 million from San Diego The Padres and Campusano avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1 million contract Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact It was Campusano's first year of arbitration eligibility. The 26-year-old entered last season as the Padres' top catcher, but he was eventually passed on the depth chart by Kyle Higashioka and finished with just a .227/.281/.361 slash line while spending some time in the minors. Higashioka is now with the Rangers and Campusano is currently at the top of the catching hierarchy again in San Diego, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the club brought someone in to at least share the job.

Sent to El Paso The Padres optioned Campusano to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.
Impact Since the beginning of August, Campusano has slashed .163/.268/.224 with three RBI across 56 plate appearances. He'll now head back to the minors in order to get back on track, officially moving Elias Diaz into the No. 2 catcher spot behind Kyle Higashioka. Brandon Lockridge was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Homers, reaches four times Campusano went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored while also drawing a walk in Saturday's win over the Rockies.
Impact Campusano drove home San Diego's second run of the game on a groundout in the top of the second and then came around to score himself in the fourth after recording a two-out single. The catcher would then top off his night with a solo homer in the eighth, giving him his eighth long ball of the season and his first in the month of August. Campusano reached four times in the contest and he's now posted multiple hits in five of his last 10 starts. Over that stretch he's batting .323 (11-for-34) with two homers, six RBI and five runs scored.

Goes yard Wednesday Campusano went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and two total runs scored in Wednesday's 8-1 win over the Dodgers.
Impact Campusano opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second inning and sparked another rally with his solo shot in the fourth. The catcher has seen limited playing time since returning from a thumb injury in early July, going 7-for-23 (.304) over eight games since July 6. He's at a .241/.284/.390 slash line with seven homers, 37 RBI, 29 runs scored, 13 doubles and no stolen bases across 74 contests this season.

Homers in loss Campusano went 1-for-1 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 6-3 loss to Atlanta.
Impact Campusano entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh and took A.J. Minter deep for a two-run blast to make it a 5-3 deficit for the Padres. The long ball was his first hit in eight at-bats since being activated from the injured list July 5 and was his sixth homer on the year. Campusano has started just two games since his activation and seemingly won't be able to carve out much playing time unless an injury in front of him occurs. The 25-year-old backstop is slashing .230/.276/.376 with 19 extra-base hits, 33 RBI, 26 runs and a 14:29 BB:K in 228 plate appearances.

Light playing time since return Campusano is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
Impact Since being activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Campusano has started in just one of the Friars' ensuing five games. He appears to have slid behind Kyle Higashioka on the depth chart at catcher, though both backstops will be out of the lineup Wednesday while No. 3 option Brett Sullivan gets the nod behind the dish.
JULY 10, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Idle Tuesday Campusano isn't in the Padres' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners.
Impact Tuesday will mark the third time Campusano has missed a start behind the plate since being activated from the injured list Friday. Kyle Higashioka, who has been on a hot streak recently, will once again start at catcher and bat ninth.

Impact Campusano has been on the injured list since June 22 due to a left thumb injury and has played four rehab games with Single-A Lake Elsinore, during which he went 2-for-15 with a homer and four RBI. The 25-year-old backstop said he will resume catching for the Padres on Sunday, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune, at which point he should take over for Kyle Higashioka as the Friars' primary backstop. Campusano has slashed .234/.282/.371 across 220 plate appearances this season.
