C.J. Cron - Back injury still an issue
Cron was set to have his ailing back re-evaluated Thursday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact
Cron has started just one of the last four games and wasn't available to play off the bench in the Angels' most recent contest Wednesday due to a nagging back issue which dates back to earlier this season when he was with the Rockies. With the news that Nolan Schanuel is being called up, it's possible Cron will be the corresponding move for that transaction. Even without the injury, Cron likely would be facing a dip in playing time upon Schanuel's arrival.

Nolan Schanuel - Gets call to big leagues
The Angels selected Schanuel's contract from Double-A Rocket City on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
It was barely over a month ago when Schaunel was taken with the 11th overall pick in the 2023 Draft, so this is quite the fast track to the big leagues. Schaunel has batted .370/.510/.493 with one home run, four doubles and 15 RBI over 21 games across three levels in the minors to convince the Angels he was ready for a promotion. The 21-year-old will take over as the Halos' regular first baseman as they try to claw their way back into the playoff hunt.

Zach Neto - Likely to resume activity soon
Neto (back) is reportedly pain-free and is expected to return to baseball activities as soon as Friday, per MLB.com.
Impact
Neto landed on the injured list with a back injury Aug. 4 and hasn't taken part in baseball activities since. He was diagnosed with inflammation but has subsequently make progress toward a recovery. Neto is expected back before the end of the campaign, though he may still be several weeks away from a return.

Mike Trout - Could face live pitching soon
Trout (wrist) may begin facing live pitching this week, per MLB.com.
Impact
Trout has been hitting off a machine for about a week, and it now appears that he's on the verge of facing live pitching for the first time since suffering a hamate bone fracture in his left wrist in early July. The star outfielder recently said that he's still feeling pain in the wrist but expressed optimism in his progress and indicated that he believes he's getting closer to returning to the field. The Angels have been patient with Trout's recovery, though they could certainly use the boost that his return to the lineup would bring, as the team currently sits seven games out of a wild-card spot in the American League.

Matt Thaiss - Snaps hitless stretch with homer
Thaiss went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in a 2-0 win against the Rangers on Wednesday.
Impact
Thaiss came into Wednesday having gone 0-for-10 over his previous five games and batting a meager .107 through 28 at-bats in August. He snapped the cold spell, at least temporarily, with a 450-foot solo blast to center field in the ninth inning that gave the Angels an important insurance run. Thaiss has been working as Los Angeles' primary catcher of late with Chad Wallach also struggling this month, though both backstops will likely see less playing time when Logan O'Hoppe (shoulder), who his currently rehabbing in Triple-A, returns to the lineup in the coming weeks.

Shohei Ohtani - Blasts homer No. 42
Ohtani went 3-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday in a 2-0 victory versus Texas.
Impact
Ohtani set the Angels off to positive start with his 437-foot solo shot in the first inning, and that was all the team needed in a shutout of the AL West frontrunners. The long ball was the two-way star's 42nd of the campaign, placing him one behind MLB leader Matt Olson. Ohtani also notched his first multi-hit performance since Aug. 7, and he got through the game without striking out for the first time in six contests.

Carlos Estévez - Shows poise in 26th save
Estevez earned a save against the Rangers on Wednesday, allowing two hits and striking out two batters over one scoreless inning.
Impact
Estevez came on in the ninth frame to protect a two-run lead and quickly found himself in trouble when Mitch Garver and J.P. Martinez began the inning with back-to-back singles. However, Estevez bounced back to retire the next three batters and close the contest without further incident. After a three-outing stretch during which he allowed nine runs over 2.1 frames and blew two save chances, Estevez has bounced back to earn a save in each of his subsequent three opportunities, posting a 4:0 K:BB and tossing three scoreless innings over that stretch.

Reid Detmers - Flirts with no-hitter Wednesday
Detmers (3-9) earned the win over Texas on Wednesday, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out five batters over 7.1 scoreless innings.
Impact
Detmers came into the contest having allowed 14 earned runs over his previous two outings covering just 6.1 frames, so it made perfect sense that he shut down one of the league's top-scoring offenses in a dominant effort Wednesday. The left-handed hurler made a push for his second career no-hitter, holding the Rangers without a base knock until Marcus Semien got to him for a one-out double in the eighth inning. That was the last batter Detmers faced, and the Angels' bullpen completed the shutout to give the 24-year-old his first win since July 2. This type of outing is a good reminder of Detmers' potential, though he's been frustratingly up-and-down this season and has pitched to a mediocre 4.93 ERA and 1.37 WHIP despite a career-best 10.6 K/9.
