Parts ways with Twins
The Twins granted Hendriks his release on Friday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The 37-year-old joined Minnesota in February on a minor-league deal, which included an opt out before the start of the season. Hendriks was limited to 14 appearances last year due to elbow and hip injuries, and he struggled to a 6.59 ERA when available.

Impact
Shelton last week said he has no idea who his closer will be, so it's somewhat notable he's praised Hendriks. He's looked healthy this spring but his velocity is down from a 94.9-mph average fastball in 2025 and 95.4 mph in 2023. Still, given the weak competition in Minnesota's bullpen, he could figure into the save mix and make the Opening Day roster. Hendriks has a 3.00 ERA with a 4:3 K:BB in six innings this spring.

Impact
Hendriks has looked healthy this spring but his velocity is down from a 94.9 mph average fastball in 2025 and 95.4 mph in 2023. It's not clear if Hendriks will even make the Opening Day roster at this point, but he's still potentially in the closer mix. Still, the signs for Hendriks are encouraging after undergoing right elbow ulnar nerve transposition with posterior interosseous nerve release surgery in September.

Makes spring debut
Hendriks (elbow) struck out one batter and gave up one hit and no walks over a scoreless inning Tuesday in the Twins' 5-3 loss to the Rays in Grapefruit League play.
Impact
Hendriks took the hill for his spring debut Tuesday, signaling that he's back to full health after undergoing right elbow ulnar nerve transposition with posterior interosseous nerve release surgery back in September. The 37-year-old righty has been limited to just 19 big-league appearances over his last three seasons and hasn't been particularly effective when available, so the Twins likely aren't envisioning him filling a high-leverage role in 2026. Hendriks' main objective is to pitch well enough in spring training to earn a spot in the Twins' Opening Day bullpen, as he's attending camp as a non-roster invitee.

Throws live batting practice
Hendriks (elbow) threw a live batting practice session Monday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Hendriks underwent right elbow ulnar nerve transposition with posterior interosseous nerve release surgery last September, and this appears to be the first time he's faced hitters since that operation. The 37-year-old made only 14 appearances for the Red Sox in 2025, collecting a 6.59 ERA and 12:7 K:BB over 13.2 innings. Hendriks is in Twins camp as a non-roster invitee, but if he looks sharp this spring he could push for a leveraged bullpen role.

Finds work in Minnesota
Hendriks (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Wednesday and received an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact
Hip and elbow injuries limited Hendriks to just 14 regular-season appearances in 2025, during which he accumulated a 6.59 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 13.2 frames. An unstable bullpen situation in Minnesota may allow the 37-year-old righty to win a spot on the Twins' Opening Day roster, but he will first need to prove he can still be effective in the Grapefruit League.

Sox decline option
The Red Sox declined Hendriks' (elbow) $12 million mutual option for 2026 on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact
Hendriks missed the majority of the season dealing with hip and elbow injuries and posted a 6.59 ERA across 13.2 innings when healthy, so the Red Sox will pay him a $2 million buyout instead of the $12 million he would have been owed next year. The right-handed reliever is set to turn 37 in February, and although he may still receive some interest in the open market despite his injury history, there likely isn't a landing spot where he would have a chance to pitch in high-leverage situations consistently.
