Continuing career south of border McCann signed a contract Friday with Mexican League club Piratas de Campeche.

Impact The 27-year-old McCann spent all of last season in the big leagues as the Athletics' No. 2 catcher, slashing .236/.318/.371 with five home runs, 15 RBI and 13 runs over 157 plate appearances. After losing out to Jhonny Pereda in a battle for the backup catching job this spring, McCann was dropped from the 40-man roster, but he temporarily remained with the organization after clearing waivers. The Athletics then released him shortly before the start of the minor-league season, and after about a month and a half on the open market, McCann has finally settled on a new home. A strong showing in Mexico could serve as a springboard for McCann to potentially catch on with an MLB club later on this season or in 2026.

Loses out in roster battle The Athletics reassigned McCann to minor-league camp Monday.

Impact McCann spent the entire 2024 season on Oakland's active roster as a backup catcher and slashed .236/.318/.371 with five home runs and 15 RBI over 157 plate appearances, but he was designated for assignment in January and later outrighted to the minors upon clearing waivers. McCann still received an invitation to big-league camp and was once again given the chance to compete for a backup gig behind No. 1 backstop Shea Langeliers, but the Athletics seem content to move forward with either Jhonny Pereda and Tyler Soderstrom as Langeliers' understudy. Look for McCann to spend most of the upcoming season at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Outrighted to Triple-A McCann cleared waivers Wednesday and was sent outright to Triple-A Las Vegas, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.

Impact After spending all of last season in the big leagues as Shea Langeliers' backup, McCann will now be relegated to minor-league depth in favor of Jhonny Pereda. McCann's last Triple-A season saw him slash .270/.351/.474 with 17 homers and 57 RBI, and he could earn his way back into the majors with similar production in 2025.
