Cardinals' Next Move With Red-Hot Kyle Leahy Becoming Clear The St. Louis Cardinals are about to make a change when it comes to Kyle Leahy.
8 HOURS AGO • SI.COM
Workload will be 'significantly curtailed' Leahy's innings are expected to be "significantly curtailed," possibly as soon as his start Sunday in Philadelphia, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Leahy is at 122.1 innings this season, which is already a 34.3-inning jump from last season. His career high in innings is 144.2, but that came back in 2022, the last year he was used as a full-time starter. The Cardinals currently have no plans to shut Leahy down, but he could make some piggyback starts or perhaps shift to the bullpen. Leahy has shown no signs of tiring in his transition to the rotation, logging a pristine 1.38 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 52:9 K:BB through 52.1 innings over his last 10 starts. However, the Cardinals want to be proactive in managing the right-hander's workload. Quinn Mathews stands to benefit from the curtailing of Leahy's workload, as he will likely make multiple starts and/or bulk relief appearances down the stretch.

Blanks Cincy for win No. 10 Leahy (10-4) picked up the win in Tuesday's 3-0 victory over the Reds, scattering three hits over five scoreless innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.
Impact The right-hander fired 57 of 90 pitches for strikes and only allowed one runner to even reach second base against him, before Leahy handed the ball of to his bullpen to complete the shutout. It's the fourth time in his last 10 starts that Leahy has blanked the opposition, and over that span he's gone 5-0 with a stellar 1.38 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 52:9 K:BB through 52.1 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come this weekend on the road in Philadelphia.

Sharp in ninth win Leahy (9-4) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits over five innings in a 7-1 victory over the Phillies. He struck out six without walking a batter.
Impact The right-hander tossed 57 of 81 pitches for strikes as he out-lasted Zack Wheeler, who fell apart in the fifth inning. Leahy has given up two runs or fewer in an impressive nine straight starts, going 4-0 over that stretch while delivering a 1.52 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 46:9 K:BB over 47.1 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Cincinnati.

Picks up eighth win Leahy (8-4) earned the win after allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out eight over five innings during a 3-2 win over the Rockies on Friday.
Impact Leahy recorded his eighth consecutive start allowing two or fewer earned runs dating back to June 23. Leahy allowed two runs on two RBI groundouts from Troy Johnston. Over his last seven starts, the 29-year-old owns a 3-0 record, 1.75 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB over 36 innings. The right-hander is scheduled to make his next start Wednesday against the Phillies.

Yet another quality start Leahy did not factor into Friday's decision against the Cardinals, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out three across six innings.
Impact Leahy kept the Blue Jays off the board through five innings, but any chance of logging his first win since July 4 was dashed after he gave up an RBI double to Kazuma Okamoto in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1. It was the third consecutive quality start for Leahy and his sixth of the season, and he has a 3.44 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 91:35 K:BB over 107.1 innings. His next start is lined up for next weekend at home against the Rockies.

Turns in another quality start Leahy allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out nine over six innings in a no-decision versus the Reds on Sunday.
Impact Leahy continues to impress -- this was the first time he's allowed multiple runs since June 17 versus the Padres. Over his four outings in July, he's given up just three runs across 20 innings while adding a 21:3 K:BB. Leahy is now at a 3.55 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 88:34 K:BB through 101.1 innings over 20 starts this season. While his 3.0 BB/9 is a bit of a concern, Leahy is doing a good job of limiting damage, especially over the last month-plus. His next start is projected to be at Toronto.

Delivers quality start Monday Leahy allowed one run on three hits and struck out four without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Monday.
Impact Leahy limited the damage to a Jo Adell solo home run in the third inning, but the Cardinals' bullpen let him down. Leahy has allowed just two runs with a 20:7 K:BB across 25.1 innings over his last five starts. For the season, he has produced a 3.59 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 79:33 K:BB across 95.1 innings through 19 starts, which already puts him above the 88 innings he threw as a full-time reliever in 2025. That could put him at risk of some workload management as the campaign continues, but he's showing little reason for concern at this time. Leahy's next start is projected to be at home versus the Reds.
