GAME LOG

INJURIES

Surrenders five runs Leahy allowed five runs on six hits and struck out six without walking a batter over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Sunday.
Impact Leahy has seen a planned workload reduction since mid-August, but this was the first time he's had a truly bad outing in a while. He hadn't given up more than two runs in any game since June 17 versus the Padres. Leahy is now at a 3.41 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 124:38 K:BB through 132 innings over 27 starts. The right-hander will be tough to trust in fantasy if he continues to work as a starter, which will reduce his chances to pick up wins in September. His next appearance is projected to be at home versus the White Sox.

Another short outing Saturday Leahy didn't factor into the decision Saturday as the Cardinals fell 6-2 to the Pirates, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over three innings. He struck out three.
Impact The only blemish on the right-hander's line came via a Brandon Lowe solo shot in the first inning. Leahy was limited to 51 pitches (32 strikes) as St. Louis keeps a close eye on his workload, and he hasn't completed five innings in either of his last two starts. Despite a 1.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 43:5 K:BB in 40 innings since the All-Star break, Leahy's fantasy value will be capped if he isn't allowed to last long enough to qualify for a win. He lines up to make his next start on the road next weekend against the Rockies.

Goes four scoreless vs. Phillies Leahy didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Phillies, allowing two hits and two walks over four scoreless innings. He struck out four.
Impact Leahy appeared to be on a pitch count Sunday, as the Cardinals look to limit the right-hander's workload down the stretch. Coming into the day, Leahy had gone five or more innings in each of his previous six outings, posting a 1.91 ERA across 33 innings in that span. Overall, Leahy sports a 3.13 ERA across 25 starts (126.1 innings) this season with a 1.30 WHIP and 115:37 K:BB. He'll likely be limited to around 65 pitches again his next time out, currently scheduled to come at home against the Pirates.

Workload will be 'significantly curtailed' Leahy's innings are expected to be "significantly curtailed," possibly as soon as his start Sunday in Philadelphia, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Leahy is at 122.1 innings this season, which is already a 34.3-inning jump from last season. His career high in innings is 144.2, but that came back in 2022, the last year he was used as a full-time starter. The Cardinals currently have no plans to shut Leahy down, but he could make some piggyback starts or perhaps shift to the bullpen. Leahy has shown no signs of tiring in his transition to the rotation, logging a pristine 1.38 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 52:9 K:BB through 52.1 innings over his last 10 starts. However, the Cardinals want to be proactive in managing the right-hander's workload. Quinn Mathews stands to benefit from the curtailing of Leahy's workload, as he will likely make multiple starts and/or bulk relief appearances down the stretch.

Blanks Cincy for win No. 10 Leahy (10-4) picked up the win in Tuesday's 3-0 victory over the Reds, scattering three hits over five scoreless innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.
Impact The right-hander fired 57 of 90 pitches for strikes and only allowed one runner to even reach second base against him, before Leahy handed the ball of to his bullpen to complete the shutout. It's the fourth time in his last 10 starts that Leahy has blanked the opposition, and over that span he's gone 5-0 with a stellar 1.38 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 52:9 K:BB through 52.1 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come this weekend on the road in Philadelphia.

Sharp in ninth win Leahy (9-4) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits over five innings in a 7-1 victory over the Phillies. He struck out six without walking a batter.
Impact The right-hander tossed 57 of 81 pitches for strikes as he out-lasted Zack Wheeler, who fell apart in the fifth inning. Leahy has given up two runs or fewer in an impressive nine straight starts, going 4-0 over that stretch while delivering a 1.52 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 46:9 K:BB over 47.1 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Cincinnati.
