Impact Piper gave the Rays a 3-1 lead in the second inning after smacking a two-run homer off Trevor Rogers to center field. It was the first major-league home run of Pipers' career in just his second game in the big leagues. He's unlikely to see much more playing time for Tampa Bay, given that both Liam Hicks and Nick Fortes are both ahead of Piper on the depth chart.

Back in majors as third catcher The Rays recalled Piper from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Impact Piper picked up one hit (his first in the majors) in five plate appearances for the Rays earlier this season. He will serve as the team's No. 3 catcher.

Optioned Tuesday The Rays optioned Piper to Double-A Montgomery on Tuesday, though he'll remain with the big-league club through Wednesday's series finale in Colorado as a member of the taxi squad.

Impact The 28-year-old was promoted Monday to provide catching depth in the wake of Hunter Feduccia's departure at the trade deadline, but trade-acquisition Liam Hicks has quickly joined the active roster. Piper started Monday's contest and went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in his major-league debut. He should return to Montgomery later this week, as long as Hicks and backup Nick Fortes stay healthy.

Impact The Rays traded Hunter Feduccia to the Dodgers on Monday, and while they acquired Liam Hicks from the Marlins at the deadline, Hicks won't be able to join the team in time for Monday's game. Piper could be optioned back to the minors as soon as Hicks is able to take over the primary catcher duties ahead of Nick Fortes. Piper, 28, is slashing .253/.358/.498 with 11 home runs and 11 steals in 64 games at Double-A.
