Braves reassign former closer Ken Giles to minor league camp

The Atlanta Braves have reassigned Ken Giles to their minor league camp, ending the former closer’s bid to make the opening day roster

Impact Giles was in camp as a non-roster invitee and allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts and three walks in three innings across his three Grapefruit League appearances. The veteran right-hander has just nine big-league appearances since 2019 but has a strong track record and could receive a look later on with Atlanta if he can stay healthy.

Signs MiLB deal with LAD The Dodgers signed Giles to a minor-league contract Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Impact Giles held a showcase on May 11 for teams, and the Dodgers must have liked what they saw enough to give the right-hander a chance. Giles is not far removed from being one of the best closers in baseball, but he's missed significant time over the past few seasons due to a variety of arm injuries. Los Angeles will have to add Giles to the 40-man roster in order to have him join the club, but if he pitches well in the minors he could be an option for the Dodgers this summer.

Impact Giles staged multiple free-agent showcases during the winter and spring, but those workouts apparently didn't yield any offers to his liking. After spending the last five weeks working at Driveline in Phoenix, the 32-year-old reliever will attempt again to attract MLB interest. He's pitched sparingly over the last three years due to a range of arm injuries but is said to be fully healthy here in May of 2023.

Lands MiLB deal with Giants Giles agreed Monday with the Giants on a minor-league contract, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Impact Giles elected free agency Aug. 14 after he was designated for assignment by the Mariners, but he has now quickly found a new opportunity with the Giants. The 31-year-old appeared in five games for Seattle this season, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out six. Those numbers are a little misleading though, as he surrendered 13 runs over 12.1 frames during his minor-league rehab assignment. Giles will likely find himself elevated to the Giants bullpen at some point down the stretch.

While the right-hander is back to full health, he'll lose his spot on the 40-man roster, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him become a free agent if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
