Should make spring debut soon Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Tuesday that Merryweather (back) should be ready to make his Grapefruit League debut soon, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.

Impact Atkins also added that he envisions Merryweather filling a hybrid bullpen role, wherein the 29-year-old could be used as an opener and as a multi-inning reliever. Because Merryweather will need to more time to build up than a traditional one-inning reliever, he shouldn't be considered a lock for the Opening Day roster. That said, Merryweather likely won't be in store for a lengthy stay on the injured list if he fails to break camp with the big club, assuming he avoids any setbacks with his back once he's integrated into the spring pitching schedule.

Dealing with tight back The Blue Jays announced Tuesday that Merryweather is dealing with lower-back tightness and is considered day-to-day, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

Impact Merryweather is expected to be held out of Grapefruit League action as a result of the injury, but the Blue Jays are hopeful that a few days of rest will be all the right-hander needs to overcome the issue. The 29-year-old made his MLB debut in 2020, making eight appearances (three starts) and logging a 4.15 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB across 13 innings.

Impact The righty made his debut as a 28-year-old last season, making three starts and five bullpen appearances. He was much more an opener than a true starter, however, as he didn't throw more than two innings in any game, but he was primarily a starter in the minors. His inexperience suggests he won't be a favorite to make Toronto's starting five, though his 27.3 percent strikeout rate last season did hint at some promise.
