INJURIES

Undergoes Tommy John surgery Gray (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery and an internal brace procedure Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Gray's operation rules him out for the remainder of the 2024 campaign, and he'll likely be forced to miss most of 2025 as well. The 26-year-old righty will finish the season with 13 earned runs allowed over 8.1 innings across two starts.

Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray to have season-ending elbow surgery

Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray will have season-ending surgery for a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow
JULY 19, 2024 • ASSOCIATED PRESS
Set for elbow UCL surgery Gray will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact It's not yet clear whether Gray will need a full Tommy John surgery or internal brace procedure, but either way he is done for the 2024 season and appears likely to be out for most, if not all, of the 2025 campaign, as well. Gray was limited to just two starts this season before getting hurt, allowing 13 runs over 8.1 innings.
JULY 19, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Moved to 60-day IL Gray (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gray hasn't pitched since April due to a flexor strain in his throwing arm and will vacate his spot on the 40-man roster in favor of Juan Yepez. Gray suffered a setback during his rehab assignment and will be shut down from throwing for at least a few weeks. He's set to undergo an MRI near the All-Star break, at which point there should be more clarity on his recovery timeline.

Timeline pushed back Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Tuesday that the club will wait to send Gray (elbow) for an MRI until around the All-Star break, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports...
Impact The right-hander experienced elbow discomfort and more fatigue than normal during his rehab start with Triple-A Rochester on Sunday, and it appears he'll be shut down from throwing for at least the next couple weeks. Gray was in the latter stages of the rehab assignment and was soon expected to rejoin the Nationals, so it's a big blow for both him and the rotation. Depending on when he's actually sent for imaging, Gray shouldn't be expected back until at least sometime in August.

Impact Gray compared the discomfort to what he felt in April when he sustained the right flexor strain, a concerning sign for the 26-year-old, who was close to reinstatement before the setback. Gray surrendered seven runs across three innings Sunday before reporting the pain. He'll continue to be evaluated over the coming days as the severity of the setback is determined.
JULY 2, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Cruises through latest rehab start Gray (elbow) struck out four and allowed one run on four hits and zero walks over six innings in his rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Rochester.
Impact Gray held Indianapolis scoreless through five frames before letting in a run in the sixth, but the right-hander still delivered the lengthiest and best of his four rehab starts since starting his minor-league assignment June 9. He covered 73 pitches in Tuesday's outing, a workload that should put him in line to handle a traditional starter's role when he returns from the 15-day injured list. Gray appears likely to rejoin the Washington rotation Monday or Tuesday against the Mets, as the Nationals are listing Patrick Corbin as the starter for Sunday's series finale in Tampa Bay, per Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com.
JUNE 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Making rehab appearance Tuesday Gray (elbow) will make his next rehab start for Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Gray is expected to work around six innings or 90 pitches Tuesday after firing 79 pitches in his last minor-league rehab start Wednesday. If all goes according to plan, this looks to be his last rehab outing.
JUNE 24, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Second rehab start set Gray (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday with Double-A Harrisburg, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact The 26-year-old opened his rehab assignment with Single-A Fredericksburg over the weekend and threw 43 pitches across three innings. Gray will continue to build up his workload in the minors, and manager Dave Martinez said up to five rehab starts could be necessary before the right-hander rejoins the Nationals.

Impact The 24-year-old lefty made just two starts this season before he landed on the injured list with an elbow strain, but he's now entering the final stage of his rehab program. Gray is expected to throw about four innings during his first outing, and he'll likely need several appearances in the minors before rejoining Washington's rotation.
JUNE 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Throws live bullpen session Gray (elbow) threw 76 pitches in a live batting practice session Thursday, Bobby Blanco of MASN Sports reports.
Impact Gray mixed in his offspeed and breaking pitches more frequently and increased his pitch count by 26 pitches compared to his first session. He's expected to stay on a five-day rotation, lining him up to throw again Tuesday. Following Tuesday's session, he's expected to progress to the next step of his recovery, presumably a rehab assignment.
