Scuffles against Mets Gray (0-1) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over four-plus innings as the Nationals fell 7-3 to the Mets. He struck out five.
Impact The right-hander had trouble commanding his stuff, throwing only 47 of 80 pitches for strikes and getting tagged for four extra-base hits when he did come over the plate, including a Jeff McNeil solo shot in the third inning. Gray's April doesn't get any easier in his next outing, a road start Wednesday in Atlanta against the defending champs.

Begins season as No. 2 starter Manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gray will start the second game of the Nationals' season-opening series with the Mets, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
Impact Gray is tentatively lined up to start Friday, though Martinez acknowledged that the right-hander may be moved back to Saturday if Thursday's season opener is postponed due to rain being in the forecast that day in Washington D.C. Though Gray's spot in the rotation was never believed to be in any jeopardy, fantasy managers may be best off treading carefully with the 24-year-old, who struggled with both his command and control as a rookie. He showed improvement in the latter area by posting a 13:1 K:BB over 9.2 innings during the Grapefruit League season, but he surrendered five home runs en route to finishing the exhibition slate with a 9.31 ERA.

Fans five in Thursday's outing Gray gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits over 3.1 innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out five.
Impact After a shaky spring debut, Gray was able to hit his spots better in his second outing. The 24-year-old is locked into a rotation spot for the Nationals to begin the season, and his ability to stay out of the middle of the plate will be one of the keys to his development in 2022 after he posted an ugly 2.42 HR/9 and 5.48 ERA over his first 70.2 big-league innings last year.
MARCH 25, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Rocked in spring debut Gray gave up four runs on four hits, including three home runs, in 1.2 innings during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.
Impact It was not an encouraging start to the spring for the 24-year-old considering he served up 19 homers in 70.2 big-league innings last season between the Dodgers and Nationals, but manager Dave Martinez thinks Gray will be able to iron out the issues he had Saturday, per Jessica Camerato of MLB.com. "He threw the ball well," Martinez said after the game. "The ball was coming out -- it was just, location. A couple balls he tried to get in just ran back over the plate. ... For him, it's working ahead in counts. His putaway pitch, he's trying to bury too many pitches. He's got to start throwing his breaking balls a little bit more for strikes." Gray has a spot in the Opening Day rotation locked up, and Washington is hoping his 24.8 percent strikeout rate in the majors last year is a better reflection of his future than his bloated HR rate.

Earns second straight win Gry (2-2) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out four and earning a win over the Rockies.
Impact Gray kept Colorado off the board through five innings and didn't face much of a threat until the sixth. He allowed the first three batters of the inning to reach base and eventually coughed up a three-run double to Ryan McMahon, ending his outing. The 6-foot-1 rookie has completed at least five innings in four straight starts but owns a 6.23 ERA during that span. Gray is expected to make his final start of the year this weekend at home against Boston.
