Right-hander Josiah Gray and Washington Nationals agree to $1.35 million contract

Right-hander Josiah Gray and the Washington Nationals avoided salary arbitration when they agreed to a $1.35 million, one-year contract, the same salary he earned last season

Avoids arbitration with Nationals The Nationals and Gray (elbow) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.35 million contract Friday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gray was limited to three rehab starts this season as he returned from UCL surgery and will receive the same salary he got in 2025. The right-hander is expected to be ready to go at the start of spring training, though he will likely face workload restrictions in 2026 after throwing a combined 35 innings over the previous two seasons.

Won't pitch for Nationals in 2025 Gray (elbow) has returned to the Nationals' spring training complex in Florida and will not pitch in the majors this season, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gray made three rehab starts following July 2024 UCL surgery, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings with a 5:5 K:BB. The Nationals have decided that's enough for the right-hander, so Gray will begin his offseason work now rather than make a late-season return to the major-league club. Gray has a good chance to open the 2026 campaign in the Nationals' rotation, though he'll likely have workload restrictions in place after totaling just 29.1 innings over the last two seasons.

Slated for three-inning rehab start Gray (elbow) is scheduled to throw approximately three innings and 45 pitches in his next rehab start Friday with Triple-A Rochester, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Gray has already made two rehab starts as he works his way back from his July 2024 Tommy John surgery, which involved the insertion of an internal brace. After covering 1.2 innings and tossing 34 pitches in his most recent outing with Double-A Harrisburg this past Saturday, Gray will increase his workload as he moves on to Rochester for what will be his final rehab start with the minor-league season coming to a close this weekend. Assuming he makes it out of Friday's outing no worse for the wear, Gray could be reinstated from the 60-day injured list for the final week of the season, though he would likely be in line for just one abbreviated start or multi-inning relief appearance with Washington.

Goes 1.2 innings in rehab start Gray (elbow) struck out two and scattered four hits and no walks over 1.2 scoreless innings in a rehab start with Double-A Harrisburg on Saturday.
Impact On the comeback trail following his July 24, 2024 Tommy John surgery with internal brace, Gray has now completed two rehab starts and has built up to 34 pitches. The right-hander doesn't have enough time left to get stretched out for a traditional starting role, but he looks like he'll have a chance to make it back from the 60-day injured list before the end of the season. The Nationals haven't indicated whether Gray will report to Triple-A Rochester to make one final start before the International League season comes to an end, or if he'll instead join the big club ahead of their series with the Mets during the upcoming weekend.

Completes first rehab start Gray (elbow) struck out a batter and allowed no hits and two walks over 1.1 scoreless innings in a rehab start Sunday with High-A Wilmington. He also hit a batter.
Impact Gray returned to the mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery with an internal brace last July and handled a light workload, tossing 34 pitches (18 strikes) before departing. He'll likely continue to get stretched out over the course of two or three more rehab starts, though he likely doesn't have enough time left in the season to get built up to handle a typical starter's workload. Even so, Gray still looks to be a candidate to return from the Nationals' 60-day injured list by the end of September to serve as a reliever or as a piggyback starter.

To begin rehab assignment Gray (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Wilmington on Sunday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Gray is slated to throw two innings or 35 pitches during Sunday's outing, his first game action since going on the injured list after undergoing Tommy John surgery in July of 2024. Considering the lengthy layoff, Gray will likely require several rehab starts before being cleared to come off the injured list. Still, the 27-year-old is expected to pitch for the Nationals before the 2025 season ends.

Completes live BP Gray (elbow) threw a about 30 pitches of live batting practice Wednesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact The right-hander continues working his way back from the Tommy John surgery with an internal brace that he underwent in July 2024. Gray may need another live session or two before being cleared for a rehab assignment. Assuming he can avoid a setback, the 27-year-old has a good chance of coming off the injured list for a cameo with the Nationals before the end of the season.
