Red Sox to keep Rich Hill in the rotation for now; Josh Winckowski will be available in relief Rich Hill will start for the Red Sox on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh. Josh Winckowski will be available in relief.
AUGUST 15, 2022 • MASSLIVE.COM
Encounters trouble in sixth inning Winckowski tossed 5.2 innings against Baltimore on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two batters in a no-decision.
Impact Winckowski navigated through five scoreless frames before the Orioles got to him in the sixth. Baltimore put up three runs in the inning, tying the score 3-3 to remove Winckowski from a chance at a third straight victory and ending his push for a quality start. The right-handed rookie nonetheless gave Boston a solid outing, and he's posted a 3.45 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 15.2 innings across his past three starts.
AUGUST 12, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Solid in Friday's win Winckowski (5-5) allowed a run on five hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings to earn the win over the Royals on Friday.
Impact Winckowski's lone mistake was a solo home run to Salvador Perez in the fifth inning. This was Winckowski's second win in a row after he lost four straight starts in July. The right-hander owns a 4.68 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 32:18 K:BB through 50 innings across 10 outings overall. The 24-year-old is tentatively projected for a home start versus the Orioles next week.
AUGUST 6, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Allows two runs in victory Winckowski (4-5) yielded two runs on seven hits and a walk over five frames Sunday, striking out one batter and earning a win over Milwaukee.
Impact The only damage against Winckowski came via Hunter Renfroe's two-run blast in the second inning. The right-handed rookie had been tagged with 14 runs in as many innings over his previous three starts but he lowered his season ERA from 5.18 to 5.00 during his fourth career win. Winckowski is lined up to start in Kansas City next week.
AUGUST 1, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in return to mound Winckowski (3-5) got the loss after he tossed three innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one against the Guardians.
Impact Winckowski made his return from the COVID-19-related injured list Tuesday and didn't have his best stuff. He gave up one run in the first inning before giving up a solo homer to Austin Hedges in the second frame and a three-run shot to Nolan Jones in the third. The right-hander has now surrendered five home runs over his last three starts after only allowing one in his prior five outings. He entered the month of July with a 3.60 ERA but that has now ballooned all the way up to 5.18 over 40 innings in eight starts this season. Winckowski is tentatively set to toe the rubber again Sunday against the Brewers.
JULY 27, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Returns for Tuesday's start The Red Sox activated Winckowski (illness) from the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday. He will start Tuesday against the Guardians.
Impact Winckowski's most recent start was a six-inning, three-run effort in Tampa on July 13. The rookie has pitched to a 4.38 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in seven starts this season and could be primed for a quality night against a Cleveland team he limited to two runs over 5.1 innings June 25.
JULY 26, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to start Tuesday Winckowski (illness) is likely to return from the COVID-19-related injured list to start Tuesday's home game against the Guardians, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican...
Impact Per MLB.com, manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Winckowski hadn't yet cleared the league's COVID-19 testing protocol, but the Red Sox are apparently banking on that happening by Tuesday, when the team will require a fifth starter for the first time since the All-Star break. Boston's willingness to use Winckowski coming off the IL stint without first sending him out on a rehab assignment suggests that any symptoms of the virus he's experienced aren't overly severe, but the rookie right-hander could be on a restricted pitch count Tuesday nonetheless. Winckowski tentatively lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn scheduled to come Sunday against the Brewers in Boston.
JULY 25, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Tests positive for virus Boston placed Winckowski on the COVID-19-related injured list Thursday after he tested positive for the virus, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact Winckowski started and covered six innings in Wednesday's loss to the Rays, so he likely wouldn't have been available for the Red Sox's final four games before the All-Star break as anything more than an emergency option out of the bullpen. As a result, Winckowski's move to the COVID-19 IL shouldn't prove to be too consequential, assuming he's able to make a quick recovery from the virus and is ready to go by the time the Red Sox require a fifth starter for the first time in the second half July 26. The Red Sox called up reliever Darwinzon Hernandez from Triple-A Worcester to take Winckowski's spot on the active roster.
JULY 14, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Takes loss despite quality start Winckowski (3-4) was tagged with the loss against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, completing six innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Impact Winckowski bounced back from giving up six runs over five innings in his previous outing, and he ended with his third quality start of the campaign. However, the trio of runs he allowed between the third and fourth frames were enough to saddle him with his fourth loss. Winckowski has allowed three or fewer runs in five of his seven starts overall, and he's been a helpful addition to the rotation in light of injuries to a number of Boston starters. However, Nathan Eovaldi (back), Rich Hill (knee) and Michael Wacha (shoulder) are all nearing a return, so it's unclear if Winckowski will stay in the rotation following the All-Star break.

Yankees flex muscles, division lead in victory over Red Sox
Surrenders six earned runs Winckowski (3-3) allowed six earned runs on six hits and five walks while striking out two across five innings to take the loss Thursday against the Yankees.
Impact Winckowski gave up five runs in the third inning, surrendering a grand slam to Josh Donaldson and a solo homer to Aaron Hicks. He pitched effectively for the most part otherwise and still managed to work at least five innings for his fifth consecutive start. Prior to Thursday's outing, Winckowski had allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his five appearances. Overall, he has a 4.35 ERA and a 21:12 K:BB across 31 innings.

Submits quality start in loss Winckowski (3-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Cubs.
Impact Winckowski had some trouble in the second inning, but he was otherwise solid. His six strikeouts were a season high, though his winning streak was snapped at three starts. The rookie right-hander has a 3.12 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB through 26 innings in five outings this year. The Red Sox's rotation remains in shambles, with Rich Hill (knee) hitting the injured list Saturday -- that bodes well for Winckowski to remain in a starting role even once Nathan Eovaldi (back) and Chris Sale (ribs) are ready to return. Winckowski is projected for a tough home start versus the Yankees next week.
JULY 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up third win Winckowski (3-1) earned the win over Cleveland on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four over 5.1 innings.
Impact Winckowski got into trouble and allowed a pair of runs in the third inning, but he otherwise kept Cleveland off the scoreboard. The right-hander wasn't overpowering in the victory -- he induced only five swinging strikes and punched out four batters -- but he allowed just one extra-base hit and threw 52 of 77 pitches for strikes. Winckowski has earned a win in each of his past three starts, allowing only four runs over 17 innings during that stretch. Given his success so far, Boston could be compelled to keep Winckowski in the rotation while waiting for Chris Sale (ribs) and Nathan Eovaldi (back) to return.

To remain in rotation Winckowski (2-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two over 6.2 innings Monday against the Tigers. The Red Sox announced after...
Impact Winckowski dealt with plenty of traffic on the bases, but he hung in there and managed to give the Red Sox his deepest start of the season, ultimately departing the contest with a 5-2 lead. The right-hander has now surrendered just two runs over his last two starts (11.2 innings), and he's shown that he's deserving of at least one more turn through the rotation, especially while Nathan Eovaldi (back) and Garrett Whitlock (hip) continue their respective rehab assignments.
JUNE 21, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Shows improvement in second start Winckowski (1-1) allowed four hits and a walk while striking out three over five scoreless innings to earn the win over the Athletics on Wednesday.
Impact Winckowski made his major-league debut in late May, but struggled across three innings to take the loss. He looked significantly better Wednesday in a favorable matchup, and the Red Sox's offense gave him plenty of support from the start of the game. He's now allowed a combined four runs, 10 hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in eight innings in his two starts. With Garrett Whitlock (hip) and Nathan Eovaldi (back) both on the 15-day injured list into next week at a minimum, Winckowski is likely to get one more start, which lines up to be a home game versus the Tigers early next week.
JUNE 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled ahead of start Winckowski was recalled from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Wednesday's start against the Athletics.
Impact Winckowski didn't fare particularly well during his major-league debut in late May, as he allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four in three innings to take the loss against the Orioles. However, he'll make his second career start for the Red Sox at home against the Athletics during Wednesday's matchup.

JUNE 15, 2022 • MASSLIVE.COM
Tabbed to start Wednesday Winckowski will be recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start Wednesday's game against the A's, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Impact The Red Sox have openings in their starting rotation with Nathan Eovaldi (back) and Garrett Whitlock (hip) on the injured list, and Winckowski will be called up Wednesday for his second start of the season. The 23-year-old made his MLB debut in late May and allowed four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks across three innings, but he quickly returned to the minors. He has a 3.38 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 43:8 K:BB over 42.2 innings for Worcester this year and could receive a longer look in Boston's rotation this time around.

JUNE 4, 2022 • MASSLIVE.COM
Moves back to minors The Red Sox optioned Winckowski to Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday.
Impact As expected, Winckowski's stint in the big leagues lasted just one game, as Boston summoned him from the minors to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Orioles when the team required a temporary sixth member of the rotation. The 23-year-old right-hander was handed the loss in his MLB debut after surrendering four earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four over three innings.

Takes loss in debut Winckowski (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts in three innings, taking the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Orioles.
Impact Winckowski got through the Orioles' order without taking any damage the first time, but they got to him for all four runs in the third inning. The Red Sox's bullpen then provided six innings of one-hit ball, but the offense didn't get the right-hander off the hook. Winckowski was up as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him returned to Triple-A Worcester in the near future -- the Red Sox have no apparent need to carry an extra starter.

Josh Winckowski struggles in debut, offense falls short as Red Sox split doubleheader with Orioles The Red Sox (22-25) have lost two out of three to the last-place O’s to start this weekend’s five-game series.
MAY 29, 2022 • BOSTONHERALD.COM
Recalled as 27th man Winckowski was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to serve as the 27th man in Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles.
Impact Winckowski is expected to make his major-league debut as the starter in the second game of Saturday's twin bill after he posted a 3.13 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 31.2 innings over seven starts at Triple-A Worcester to begin the year. Although Saturday's outing will likely be a spot start, he's had success in Worcester and should be in the mix for a more long-term promotion later in the year.
