Chooses free agency
De Leon became a free agent Monday.
Impact
The Red Sox announced that De Leon had been sent outright to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, but rather than accept an assignment in the minors, he'll test free agency. The 33-year-old appeared in only one game at the big-league level in 2025, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out eight in 6.2 innings Sept. 28 against Detroit.

Outrighted to Triple-A
The Red Sox outrighted De Leon to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.
Impact
De Leon made one late-season appearance for the Red Sox but has lost his 40-man roster spot heading into the offseason. The right-hander has the ability to reject the assignment and become a free agent, but it's unclear what his plans are.

Grabs win in return outing
De Leon (1-0) earned the win Sunday against the Tigers, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out eight over 6.2 innings.
Impact
Making his first MLB appearance since 2023, the right-hander shook off the rust, allowing his only damage on a Javier Baez three-run homer in the fourth inning. The Red Sox turned to the 33-year-old with the AL East already decided and a Wild Card spot secured, but despite the long layoff, he cruised through the remainder of his outing and was effective enough to earn the victory.

Called up, starting Sunday
The Red Sox selected De Leon's contract from Triple-A Worcester, and he will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Tigers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact
With the Red Sox locked into a wild-card spot and not in contention for the AL East title, they will give De Leon his first big-league opportunity since 2023. Chris Murphy was optioned in a corresponding move. De Leon put up a 6.93 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 75.1 innings with Worcester this season.

De Leon signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Tuesday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.

Hits free-agent market
De Leon (elbow) elected free agency Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact
De Leon had been removed from the Twins' 40-man roster and has decided to hit the free-agent market rather than accept an outright assignment. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in July and will miss most, if not all, of the 2024 campaign.

Gets elbow surgery
De Leon (elbow) underwent successful season-ending Tommy John surgery Wednesday along with additional procedures on his arm, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Twins didn't go into detail on what the other procedures entailed, but De Leon was apparently diagnosed with more than a torn ligament in his right elbow after the team announced just under a month ago that he would require season-ending surgery. The Tommy John surgery is the second of De Leon's career, as he previously required the operation in 2018. In addition to missing the rest of the current season, the 30-year-old right-hander will most likely be sidelined for the entire 2024 campaign as well.

Requires Tommy John surgery
De Leon is set to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery after he underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a torn ligament in his right elbow, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapoli...
Impact
De Leon already underwent Tommy John surgery once back in 2018, and now he'll have to take another year-plus off as he recovers from his second procedure. He finishes 2023 with a 4.67 ERA and 1.21 WHIP through 17.1 frames and likely won't return until late in the 2024 season, if at all.

Will be placed on injured list
De Leon (elbow) told reporters after Saturday's game he will be placed on the 15-day injured list, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact
De Leon will also undergo an MRI on his elbow, but he told reporters that he immediately knew there was something wrong and felt an "electric shock" while throwing a warm-up pitch. The Twins will likely place him on the injured list prior to Sunday's game against Detroit, and they'll announce a corresponding move to replace De Leon on the roster.

De Leon left Saturday's game versus Detroit with an apparent injury, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact
De Leon picked up the injury while warming up, and immediately ran off the mound. The right-hander will likely undergo testing to determine the severity of the injury, but he should be considered day-to-day until there are more updates.

Pitches 2.1 scoreless innings
De Leon did not factor into the decision Saturday, pitching two scoreless innings against the Tigers while not allowing any hits or walks. He struck out two.
Impact
De Leon opened the game for Minnesota and was highly-effective over his 2.1 innings of work, striking out two while not allowing a runner to reach base. He did basically all of his damage using his four-seamer and changeup and was part of a strong bullpen effort overall in shutting out the Tigers on the afternoon. The reliever had surrendered three runs over his last 2.1 innings coming in (over two appearances) but now holds a very solid 3.38 ERA on the season after Saturday's scoreless appearance.

ROTOWIRE
To start Saturday's bullpen game
De Leon will start Saturday's game against the Tigers in a bullpen game, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Impact
De Leon will likely be used as an opener and pitch an inning or two. De Leon has been a productive middle reliever for the Twins since coming up from Triple-A in mid-May with a 3.86 ERA and 15:4 K:BB ratio in 14 innings. Walks have been his flaw (7.9 BB/9 his prior three major league seasons), so his current 2.6 BB/9 is worth watching.

Selected to MLB roster
The Twins selected De Leon's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Tuesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Impact
De Leon last pitched in the majors in 2021 with the Reds, recording an 8.35 ERA and 1.80 WHIP through 18.1 frames. He's done much better this season in the minors (3.62 ERA, 1.37 WHIP) and will take the place of Jorge Alcala (undisclosed), who landed on the injured list Tuesday.

Reaches MiLB deal with Jays
The Blue Jays signed De Leon to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training.
Impact
He'll presumably get the chance to compete for a spot in the Toronto bullpen this spring, but the 29-year-old is more likely than not to report to Triple-A Buffalo before the regular season gets underway. He posted an 8.35 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 18.1 innings at the big-league level with the Reds last season before getting released in July and linking up with the Red Sox on a minor-league deal shortly thereafter.

Lands minors deal with Boston
De Leon announced Thursday via his personal Twitter account that he signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox.
Impact
De Leon will be moving on to his fourth MLB organization after he was released by the Reds just over a week ago. After being demoted to Triple-A Louisville in early May, De Leon made 12 appearances out of the bullpen with the affiliate, logging a 4.63 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 19 strikeouts in 11.2 innings. Expect him to report to Triple-A Worcester to begin his tenure with the Red Sox organization.

Released by Reds
De Leon was released by the Reds on Friday.
Impact
De Leon opened the year on the active roster but was optioned in early May and designated for assignment in mid-July. He'll now leave in search of other opportunities, though he's likely to be stuck looking for a minor-league deal as he owns a career 8.44 ERA in 48 innings at the highest level.

Loses 40-man spot
The Reds designated De Leon for assignment Monday.
Impact
De Leon earned a spot on the Reds' Opening Day roster, but he stuck around with the big club for a little over a month before he was optioned to Triple-A Louisville after posting an 8.35 ERA across his 18.1 innings out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old right-hander was dominant over his last nine relief outings at Louisville (0.96 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 14:3 K:BB in 9.1 innings), and that improved form coupled with his prospect pedigree could be enough for another organization to put in a waiver claim for him now that Cincinnati has dropped him from its 40-man roster.

Sent down Wednesday
De Leon was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.
Impact
De Leon had allowed at least two runs in each of his last three relief outings, and he has an 8.35 ERA and 1.80 ERA in 18.1 innings to begin the season. The right-hander lost out on his rotation spot in early April when Sonny Gray returned to action, and he'll now lose out on his major-league roster spot. De Leon will attempt to sort things out in the minors after left-hander Cionel Perez was recalled Wednesday.
