Becomes free agent Alfaro elected to become a free agent Friday.
Impact The Nationals removed Alfaro from their 40-man roster, and the veteran catcher declared free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. Alfaro slashed .256/.256/.308 in 14 games with the Nats this season and will likely have to settle for a minor-league contract this winter.

SEPTEMBER 2 • Associated Press
Catches on with Nationals The Nationals signed Alfaro to a minor-league contract Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Alfaro recently opted out of his minor-league deal with the Brewers after slashing .244/.285/.430 with 15 home runs and 12 stolen bases with Triple-A Nashville. He'll help supplement the organization's catching depth with Keibert Ruiz (concussion) still working his way back and Drew Millas (finger) out for the season.

Becomes free agent Alfaro exercised the release clause in his minor-league contract Monday and is now a free agent, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Impact Alfaro has spent the entire 2025 season at Triple-A Nashville, where he slashed .244/.285/.430 with 15 home runs, 49 RBI, 49 runs scored, 12 stolen bases and an 11:119 BB:K across 326 plate appearances. The 32-year-old catcher last appeared in the big leagues back in 2023, splitting the season with the Rockies and Red Sox. He'll look for a new opportunity elsewhere.

Reaches free agency Alfaro opted out of his minor-league contract with the Brewers on Monday and was granted his release, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Impact Alfaro has spent the entire 2025 season at Triple-A Nashville, slashing .244/.285/.430 with 15 home runs and 12 stolen bases over 326 plate appearances. With the 32-year-old catcher being denied a promotion to the majors to begin September, Alfaro will now look to find an opportunity elsewhere before the season winds down.
SEPTEMBER 1 • ROTOWIRE
Cut loose from big-league camp The Brewers reassigned Alfaro to minor-league camp Wednesday.
Impact After sitting out the 2024 season upon being cut loose by the Cubs last spring, Alfaro signed a minor-league deal with Milwaukee in January. He impressed at the dish this spring with an .887 OPS over 11 games in Cactus League play, but with William Contreras and Eric Haase ahead of him on the organizational depth chart at catcher, Alfaro didn't have much of a chance at breaking camp with the big club. He'll presumably open the season at Triple-A Nashville, where he'll likely share catching duties with prospect Jeferson Quero (shoulder).
MARCH 19 • ROTOWIRE
Lands NRI deal with Milwaukee The Brewers signed Alfaro to a minor-league contract Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Mike Rodriguez reports.
Impact Alfaro didn't play anywhere this past season after being released by the Cubs during spring training. The 31-year-old is a career .253/.302/.393 hitter over parts of eight big-league seasons. He will likely be assigned to Triple-A Nashville to begin the 2025 campaign.
JANUARY 14 • ROTOWIRE
Handed walking papers Alfaro was released by the Cubs on Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Impact Alfaro agreed to a minor-league deal that included an invitation to big-league camp with Chicago in December, but he'll head to the open market after failing to make the Opening Day roster. The 30-year-old backstop appeared in 18 games a season ago across stops in Colorado and Boston, but he struggled to a .146 average (7-for-52) with one homer, four RBI and two runs scored.
MARCH 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Inks minors deal with Cubs The Cubs signed Alfaro to a minor-league contract Wednesday with an invitation to major-league spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact Alfaro, 30, batted just .146/.212/.292 with one home run and 15 strikeouts in 52 major-league plate appearances last year between the Rockies and Red Sox. He'll be at least third on Chicago's organizational depth chart at catcher behind Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya.

AUGUST 15, 2023 • DEADSPIN.COM
Back with Marlins on minors deal Alfaro signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact It's a return to South Beach for Alfaro, who played for the Marlins from 2019-21. The 30-year-old catcher has seen brief action in the majors this season with the Red Sox and Rockies but has spent most of the year at the Triple-A level. That's where he'll report this week, joining the Marlins' affiliate in Jacksonville.
AUGUST 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Hits open market Alfaro cleared waivers and elected free agency Saturday after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republicanreports.
Impact Alfaro appeared in eight games during his brief time with Boston and went 2-for-17 in 20 plate appearances. The veteran backstop will look to latch on elsewhere, likely via a minor-league deal.
AUGUST 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Moves off 40-man roster The Red Sox designated Alfaro for assignment Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact Alfaro spent just under a month on the Red Sox's 40-man roster and 26-man active roster, serving as the No. 2 option at catcher while Reese McGuire (oblique) was on the shelf. As anticipated, Alfaro finds himself as the odd man out with McGuire returning from the IL on Tuesday to reclaim his role as Connor Wong's top backup. Alfaro saw limited work behind Wong while he was with Boston, going 2-for-17 with two walks against three strikeouts. The 30-year-old will now be exposed to waivers and could hold some appeal for an organization looking to upgrade its catching depth.
AUGUST 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Returns to Boston on MLB deal Alfaro signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox on Thursday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact Alfaro caught on with the Rockies after opting out of his minor-league deal with the Red Sox last month, but he's now back with Boston after Colorado cut him loose and this time he'll head straight to the majors. The 30-year-old will back up Connor Wong at catcher while Reese McGuire (oblique) is sidelined and might also see a little action in the outfield and/or at designated hitter.
JULY 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Outrighted to Triple-A Colorado outrighted Alfaro to Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday.
Impact Alfaro passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment by the Rockies last Friday. He can elect to become a free agent, but it seems there has been no decision in that regard just yet. The 30-year-old catcher and corner outfielder slashed .161/.188/.387 in his 32 plate appearances with Colorado.
JULY 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Designated for assignment Alfaro was designated for assignment by the Rockies on Friday.
Impact Alfaro slashed just .161/.188/.387 in 10 games (32 plate appearances) during his two-week stay with Colorado and now heads into DFA limbo. Austin Wynns remains the backup to starting catcher Elias Diaz.
JUNE 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Mashes three-run blast Alfaro went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer in Tuesday's loss to the Reds.
Impact Alfaro came up big late in the game with a three-run blast to center field to bring the Rockies within breathing distance. The 30-year-old went hitless in his first three games with the ballclub but has tallied three extra-base hits over his last eight at-bats. Alfaro will get the occasional start behind the dish but primarily will handle backup duties and doesn't carry much fantasy consideration. He's slashing .158/.200/.421 with four RBI, a run scored and a 0:9 BB:K over 20 plate appearances.
JUNE 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Selected to MLB roster Colorado selected Alfaro's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday.
Impact Brian Serven has been optioned out and Alfaro will take over as the new backup to Elias Diaz. Alfaro, 30, has slashed .323/.366/.524 with seven home runs and five stolen bases in 46 games this year between the Triple-A affiliates of the Red Sox and Rockies. Beyond backup catching duties, he can also play some corner outfield.
JUNE 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Signs minor-league deal Alfaro signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Saturday.
Impact Alfaro was released by the Red Sox last Saturday, and the veteran backstop finds a new club a week later. The backstop last played in the majors with the Padres in 2022, and he hit .246/.285/.383 with seven homers over 82 games and 256 at-bats. It's possible Alfaro could spend time with the Rockies, but they will need to add him to the 40-man roster in order to do so.
JUNE 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Officially released by Sox Alfaro was released by the Red Sox on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact Alfaro exercised the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract earlier this week and the Sox have now officially granted him his release. The 29-year-old catcher and corner outfielder should find interest on the open market after posting a shiny .320/.367/.520 batting line across 191 plate appearances with Triple-A Worcester.
JUNE 3, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Opts out of minors deal Alfaro has opted out of his minor-league contract with the Red Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact Alfaro has batted .320/.366/.520 with six home runs and four stolen bases across 43 games with Triple-A Worcester, but he wasn't seeing a promotion on the horizon so he'll look for a gig elsewhere. It wouldn't be a surprise if another club finds a spot on the major-league roster for him.
JUNE 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Reporting to minors The Red Sox reassigned Alfaro to minor-league camp Monday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact Though Alfaro possesses more of a track record at the big-league level than either Reese McGuire or Connor Wong, Boston saw both backstops as more ideal options behind the dish than the 29-year-old, who was attending camp as a non-roster invitee. Alfaro's minor-league deal includes an opt-out clause that allowed him to seek out an MLB roster spot elsewhere, but with no better opportunity presenting itself when he canvassed the market, he'll stick around in the Boston organization for now. Expect Alfaro to open the campaign at Triple-A Worcester.
