Managing Grade 1 oblique strain Manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Luplow has a Grade 1 strain in his oblique, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Impact Luplow appeared in six Cactus League games to begin spring training and went 4-for-16 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts. While Lovullo didn't officially rule the outfielder out for Opening Day, the 28-year-old faces a tight timetable with the start of the season just over a week away. The Diamondbacks have several left-handed hitters in the outfield, so Luplow will likely see playing time against right-handed pitchers when he's healthy.

No arbiter necessary Luplow signed a one-year, $1.4 million deal with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Luplow was acquired from the Rays shortly before the lockout in late November, and he's now officially under contract with the Diamondbacks. The 28-year-old hit .202/.326/.454 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI in 62 games between Cleveland and Tampa Bay in 2021.

Impact Luplow has been a serviceable part-time player over parts of five seasons in the majors, most recently hitting .202/.326/.454 in 62 games for Cleveland and Tampa Bay. He owns a lifetime 139 wRC+ against lefties compared to a 78 wRC+ against righties, so he'll fit best on the short side of a platoon for his new team. He underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery in mid-October but is expected to be ready for spring training.
