Fans five over 4.2 frames Oviedo allowed three runs on three hits and one walk over 4.2 innings during Wednesday's loss at Cincinnati. He had five strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision.

Impact Oviedo gave up only one run through four-plus frames, but a two-run homer from Tucker Barnhart and a hit by pitch spelled an end to his outing during the fifth inning. The 22-year-old has a 4.30 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB through 14 innings, and he lines up to pitch Monday against the Cubs.

Joins starting rotation Manager Mike Shildt said Saturday that Oviedo will join the Cardinals' starting rotation in the near future, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Impact Daniel Ponce de Leon was optioned to the Cardinals' alternate training site Saturday, so Oviedo will claim his spot in the rotation for now. Oviedo has made two starts for the Cardinals to begin the season, and he allowed four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five over 10 innings. He should take the mound on the road Wednesday against the Reds.

Impact Oviedo surrendered both of his earned runs in the second inning, allowing four consecutive hitters to reach base while also throwing a wild pitch. He limited the Pirates otherwise, setting down the side in order in three of his five innings. The outing was Oviedo's second career start, and it's unclear when he may take another turn in the rotation as the team has no scheduled doubleheaders until Sept. 5.

Getting another start Oviedo is slated to start the second game of the Cardinals' doubleheader Thursday against the Pirates, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.

Impact Oviedo will earn another turn start after he impressed in his big-league debut Aug. 19 against the Cubs, striking out four and allowing two runs over five innings to take a no-decision. Though Oviedo doesn't have a permanent spot in St. Louis' rotation, the team's spate of cancellations earlier in August will leave the Cardinals with few off days and several doubleheaders over the rest of the season. With that in mind, Oviedo could continue to make at least semi-regular starts so long as he continues to perform capably.
