Takes loss in first MLB start Ryan (0-1) was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Cubs as the result of allowing three runs on three hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out five.

Impact Ryan wasn't bad in his first big-league start -- he induced 14 swinging strikes and surrendered only three hits over five frames. However, a third-inning three-run home run by Frank Schwindel was all the Cubs needed to secure the victory in a contest during which Minnesota was shut out on only two hits. Ryan wowed with a 92:12 K:BB across 66 Triple-A innings this season, and he showed good swing-and-miss potential in his major-league debut. He'll likely stick in the rotation for the remainder of September as he auditions for the team's 2022 rotation.

Promoted for first MLB start The Twins selected Ryan's contract from Triple-A St. Paul ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Cubs, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Impact One of the prospects Minnesota received in the July 22 deal that sent Nelson Cruz to Tampa Bay, Ryan is expected to get a trial in the Twins rotation for the final month of the season as he aims to secure a starting role with the big club in 2022. Between stops at St. Paul and Durham this season, Ryan was one of the most dominant pitchers at the Triple-A level. Over 66 innings, the 25-year-old righty held opposing hitters to a .173 average while compiling a 3.41 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 92:12 K:BB.
