Sent down to El Paso
The Padres optioned Brito to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.
Impact
Brito joined the active roster Tuesday after spending the first few months of the season on the injured list, but he'll now be pushed back to Triple-A in order to make room for Matt Waldron's (forearm) return from the IL. Brito conceded two earned run in 4.1 innings during his two appearances with the big club, and he could be an option to return to San Diego later in the season to provide length out of the bullpen.

Covers 1.2 innings in 2026 debut
Brito tossed 1.2 perfect relief innings with one strikeout to earn a hold in Tuesday's 4-1 win over Arizona.
Impact
Brito pitched in the majors for the first time since undergoing UCL internal brace surgery and a flexor tendon repair procedure in April 2025. The right-hander looked great in his return, throwing 13 of 17 pitches for strikes and retiring all five batters he faced. Brito also impressed in a minor-league rehab stint leading up to his activation, recording a 1.46 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 27:14 K:BB over 37 frames spanning eight starts. He's stretched out well beyond the pitch count he registered Tuesday, so Brito could eventually be deployed as a bulk reliever or as a starter. For now, he may be assigned to work in a piggyback role with German Marquez, who was initially tabbed as an opener for Tuesday's contest but ended up covering five innings on 82 pitches.

Summed for bulk duty
The Padres recalled Brito from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Impact
Brito is slated to serve in a bulk relief capacity in Tuesday's game against Arizona. The right-hander missed all of the 2025 season and the early part of the current season following internal brace surgery on his elbow last May. In eight outings between Double-A San Antonio and El Paso, Brito collected a 1.46 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 27:14 K:BB in 37 innings.

Slated for bulk work Tuesday
Brito is expected to be deployed as the bulk reliever for Tuesday's game against Arizona, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact
It was reported earlier in the day that Brito was expected to pitch in some capacity Tuesday, and it's since been confirmed that German Marquez will open, meaning Brito is in line to serve as the bulk reliever. Assuming the right-hander is deployed after Marquez, this will mark Brito's first big-league action since undergoing internal brace surgery on his right elbow in May of 2025. The 28-year-old fired 77 pitches in his final rehab appearance, so he'll likely be held around that same number in his 2026 debut.

Likely to pitch Tuesday
Brito has a locker at Petco Park on Monday and appears set to pitch in some capacity Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact
The Padres have yet to name a starting pitcher for the second game of a four-game set, but it looks like a foregone conclusion that Brito will take the ball either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever. Brito missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from internal brace surgery on his right elbow but has pitched well in 10 minor-league outings in 2026, posting a 2.30 ERA and 36:15 K:BB over 43 innings. The righty has a high pitch count this season of 77, so he would have a somewhat limited workload Tuesday.

Activated, optioned to Triple-A
The Padres reinstated Brito (forearm) from the injured list Friday and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso.
Impact
Brito has been on the injured list all season while working his way back from the UCL internal brace surgery and flexor tendon repair procedure he underwent in May 2025. He began playing in rehab games May 7 and has posted a 3.33 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across six appearances between rookie ball and Double-A. He'll move up to Triple-A now that he's fully healthy, and a promotion to the majors could come at some point if he continues to pitch well.

FRIARSONBASE.COM
Excels in latest rehab start
Brito (forearm) struck out four batters and allowed one hit and no walks over six shutout innings Friday in a rehab start for Double-A San Antonio.
Impact
Though Brito has a minor-league option remaining, he's been making a compelling case during his rehab assignment to join the Padres as a depth starter or multi-inning option out of the bullpen once he's activated from the 60-day injured list. Brito -- who underwent a UCL internal brace and flexor tendon surgery last May -- has looked good thus far through five rehab appearances between stops in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and San Antonio. Altogether, Brito has posted a 3.72 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB in 19.1 innings. After spotting 37 of his 52 pitches for strikes during Friday's outing, Brito will likely make one more start in the minors to get further stretched out before his 30-day rehab window draws to a close.

Moves rehab to Double-A
Brito (forearm) had his minor-league rehab statement moved from the Arizona Complex League to Double-A San Antonio on Sunday, per MLB.com.
Impact
Brito got into two games in the ACL, tossing a combined six innings during which he allowed five runs on nine hits while posting a 9:1 K:BB. The right-hander is about 13 months removed from the UCL internal brace procedure he underwent in April of 2025. He's reportedly building up as a starter, so he'll likely need more time to rehab than if he were preparing to pitch out of the bullpen. Brito started for San Antonio on Sunday and allowed two runs (both unearned) on two hits and two walks while striking out one batter over four innings.

ROTOWIRE
Opens rehab assignment in ACL
Brito (forearm) struck out seven and allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk across three innings Thursday in a rehab start in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
Impact
Just over 13 months after undergoing UCL internal brace surgery as well as a flexor tendon repair operation, Brito has reached the final step in his lengthy recovery process. Despite his strong showing in his first rehab outing in Arizona, Brito is likely to be kept on assignment for the entirety of his allotted 30-day window, as he'll require multiple starts to build his pitch count and hone his command and control coming off surgery. Though the Padres are letting Brito get stretched out for a rotation role, he has a minor-league option remaining and could be sent to Triple-A El Paso rather than joining the big club once he's activated from the 60-day injured list.

Tossing bullpens
Brito (forearm) has been throwing bullpens in Padres camp, per MLB.com.
Impact
Brito is continuing to recover from the UCL internal brace surgery and flexor tendon repair he underwent in April of last year. He'll begin the campaign on the 60-day IL but could be able to return to game action around midseason.

Moved to 60-day IL
Brito (forearm) was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday.
Impact
This is a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster for German Marquez, who signed a one-year deal with San Diego earlier in the day. Brito underwent a UCL internal brace procedure and a repair of his flexor tendon in April of 2025, and the team has yet to provide a timetable for his return.
