Bound for free agency Encarnacion elected free agency Sunday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact After the Giants designated him for assignment Monday, the 28-year-old outfielder went unclaimed off waivers. Rather than sticking around in the organization as a member of the Triple-A Sacramento roster, Encarnacion opted to try his luck on the open market. Encarnacion will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal after slashing just .176/.200/.206 over 35 plate appearances with the Giants prior to being removed from their 40-man roster.

Giants call up top prospect Bryce Eldridge to try to jolt a sputtering offense

Booted off 40-man roster The Giants designated Encarnacion for assignment Monday.
Impact Encarnacion hasn't seen much action this season despite making the Giants' Opening Day roster. He has struggled at the plate when he has played, slashing .176/.200/.206 across 35 plate appearances. Encarnacion does not have any minor-league options left, so he may explore his opportunities elsewhere if he is not claimed off waivers by another team.

Idle Saturday Encarnacion isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Orioles, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Encarnacion will sit for the second day in a row after going 5-for-18 (.278) across his last six games. Casey Schmitt will work as San Francisco's designated hitter and bat fifth while Encarnacion sits.

Gaining traction as everyday player Encarnacion will start in left field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Phillies.
Impact Though he'll be playing left field in place of a resting Heliot Ramos, Encarnacion appears to have taken on a more regular role at designated hitter now that Rafael Devers has been cleared to play first base on a more frequent basis. Encarnacion will stick in the San Francisco lineup for a sixth consecutive game after producing exactly one hit in each of his previous five starts.

Doubles in defeat Encarnacion started at first base and went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 10-3 loss to the Mets.
Impact Casey Schmitt was scratched from the lineup Friday due to back tightness, opening the door for Encarnacion to make his first start of the season. The 28-year-old recorded his first hit of the campaign with a double in the eighth inning before coming around to score San Francisco's final run of the game. Rafael Devers has yet to play first base due to lingering left hamstring tightness, so Encarnacion may continue to start if Schmitt misses additional time.

On bench for season opener Encarnacion is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Even after an impressive spring in which he posted a .759 OPS in the Cactus League, the right-handed-hitting Encarnacion will be passed over for a spot in the GIants' season-opening lineup against Yankees southpaw Max Fried. The Giants will go with Casey Schmitt at first base in the opener, while Rafael Devers occupies the designated-hitter spot.

Launches first spring homer Encarnacion went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 5-2 Cactus League win over the Royals.
Impact Encarnacion drove a 383-foot homer to right-center field in the third inning, giving the Giants a four-run lead with his first long ball of the spring. The 28-year-old is competing for a roster spot ahead of Opening Day and is out of minor-league options following an injury-riddled 2025 campaign in which he slashed .200/.214/.364 with seven RBI, five runs scored, two homers and one stolen base across 56 plate appearances in 19 outings. While he has primarily operated as an outfielder in the past, Encarnacion has experience at first base and could see time at DH to open the 2026 season if San Francisco decides Bryce Eldridge needs more time to develop with Triple-A Sacramento, per Maria Guardado of MLB.com.

The 27-year-old lined a two-run double to right field in the first inning and added a single in the third. With that, he delivered his second multi-hit performance over 13 games this season. Impact Encarnacion returned to action Saturday after he missed more than a month due to a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Activated from IL The Giants reinstated Encarnacion (hamstring) from the injured list Saturday.
Impact A Grade 2 strain in Encarnacion's right hamstring has kept him on the shelf since early August. After playing in five rehab games and going 2-for-17 with two RBI, a run scored and a steal, the 27-year-old outfielder will return to San Francisco and replace Dominic Smith (hamstring) on the 28-man roster. Encarnacion will start in right field and bat seventh Saturday but isn't expected to receive regular starts down the stretch.
