Begins season on shelf Padres manager Jayce Tingler confirmed Monday that Guerra (elbow) would begin the season on the injured list, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Impact Guerra is one of seven relievers set to open the season on the shelf for a banged-up Padres pitching staff. The 25-year-old righty didn't pitch during the Cactus League slate while recovering from a Grade 1 UCL sprain, so he'll likely be in line to spend more than the minimum 10 days on the IL.

Could miss Opening Day Guerra was diagnosed with a Grade 1 UCL sprain Thursday and will be sidelined 2-to-4 weeks as a result, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Impact Guerra missed the end of the 2020 season for personal reasons, and he could be sidelined to begin the 2021 campaign due to his elbow injury. While the right-hander could begin throwing prior to Opening Day, he'll likely require time to build back up before he's cleared to return to game action. Guerra made 14 relief appearances for San Diego last year and posted a 10.13 ERA and 2.25 WHIP over 13.1 innings.

Impact Starter Garrett Richards lasted only 2.1 innings Friday, but Guerra was able to come in and deliver quality pitching in the win. The right-hander had allowed eight runs over his last three appearances, so it was surprising to see him keep a scoreless line over multiple innings. Guerra still carries an 11.17 ERA and 2.38 WHIP with 14 strikeouts and two holds in 10 appearances.
