Nationals defeat Cubs 4-3 after both sell off at deadline

Josh Bell and Luis GarcĂa homered, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-3 to cap a day when both franchises completed trade deadline teardowns
JULY 31, 2021 • Associated Press
Starting Friday Arrieta (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday's start against the Nationals.
Impact Arrieta missed just over three weeks due to a tight right hamstring, but he'll be back on the mound Friday after right-hander Trevor Williams was traded to the Mets. The 35-year-old had posted an 11.02 ERA and 2.33 WHIP in 16.1 innings across his five starts prior to his injury.

Slated to face hitters Arrieta (hamstring) will throw a simulated inning Monday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact Arrieta has been on the injured list since July 7 due to right hamstring tightness, but Monday's throwing session could help the team evaluate his progress in his recovery. A better timetable for the right-hander's return to game action could be established based on how he feels after the simulated inning.

Won't return Saturday Arrieta (hamstring) won't return from the 10-day injured list when he's first eligible Saturday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Impact Arrieta has been dealing with right hamstring tightness since July 7, and manager David Ross said Friday that the right-hander has been working on some things in the bullpen during his absence. A timetable for his return hasn't yet been established, although the Cubs may take a cautious approach so he has time to sort things out following a lackluster start to the season.

Cubs place struggling Arrieta on IL with hamstring tightness

The Cubs placed struggling right-handed starter Jake Arrieta on the 10-day injured list with right hamstring tightness and recalled righty Cory Abbott from Triple-A Iowa
JULY 7, 2021 • Associated Press
Heads to IL The Cubs placed Arrieta on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right hamstring tightness, Tim Stebbins of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
Impact The 35-year-old will be sidelined until the beginning of the second half, and possibly longer. Arrieta was sieged for seven runs in 1.2 innings Tuesday, and though he's put forth very few good starts in the last couple months, he may remain part of the starting rotation once healthy due to a lack of better options. Trevor Williams is an option to start games during Arrieta's absence, as is Cory Abbott, whom the Cubs recalled Wednesday in a corresponding move.

Another disaster start Tuesday Arrieta (5-9) coughed up seven runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 1.2 innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus Philadelphia.
Impact This was the second straight start Arrieta failed to get out of the second inning. His former team hit him hard Tuesday, with a Andrew McCutchen grand slam in the first inning and a three-run rally in the second. The right-hander's ERA ballooned again to 6.30 with a 1.64 WHIP and 66:36 K:BB across 74.1 innings. The 35-year-old continues to be untrustworthy from a fantasy standpoint, and his rotation spot could be in jeopardy now that Trevor Williams (abdomen) is back. For now, Arrieta lines up to start against St. Louis this weekend.

Phillies hand Cubs 10th straight loss with 13-3 romp

OdĂşbel Herrera hit a three-run homer, and the Philadelphia Phillies went deep five times while handing the Chicago Cubs their 10th straight loss with a 13-3 romp

Cubs drop sixth straight as questions about Jake Arrieta's spot in the rotation linger “It stinks, it does,” Arrieta said. “I feel just as responsible as anybody for letting this continue."
JULY 1, 2021 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Has another rough outing Arrieta allowed six runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks across 1.2 innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Brewers. He struck out two.
Impact Arrieta was better his last time out, allowing just two earned runs across five innings, but he's had way too many poor performances this season. The veteran righty has now allowed 25 runs (20 earned) across his last six outings, and his season-long ERA of 5.57 reflects his struggles. Coming off of a disappointing 2020 campaign in Philadelphia in which he posted a 5.08 ERA, Arrieta is not a reliable fantasy option at this point in his career. He lines up to face the Phillies in his next scheduled start Tuesday.
