INJURIES

Activated and optioned The Nationals reinstated Pineda (oblique) from the 60-day injured list Sunday and optioned him to Double-A Harrisburg, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Pineda has spent the entire season on the IL due to the left oblique strain, though he was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in late May before being shut down soon thereafter due to a setback. The 23-year-old catcher was cleared to return to game action in the minors coming out of the All-Star break and will ultimately settle at the Double-A level now that his 20-day rehab window has come to an end. Washington granted right-hander Paolo Espino his unconditional release to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Pineda.

Continuing rehab assignment Pineda (oblique) will serve as the designated hitter Thursday with High-A Wilmington, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact It will be Pineda's eighth total game on this current minor-league rehab assignment. He had to be pulled off a previous rehab stint in May because of a left oblique strain, but that injury seems to be fully in the rearview now. The 23-year-old catcher originally went on the major-league IL at the end of spring training because of a fractured finger.
JULY 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Moved to 60-day IL Pineda (oblique) was transferred Wednesday from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact This move clears out a 40-man roster spot for Rico Garcia, who is joining the Nationals' bullpen Wednesday. Pineda originally landed on the 15-day IL at the end of spring training because of a fractured finger and then suffered a left oblique strain in May just as he embarked on a minor-league rehab assignment. It's unclear when he might be ready again for live games.
JULY 19, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Suffers oblique strain Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Friday that Pineda (finger) is now dealing with a left oblique strain, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Pineda began a minor-league rehab assignment last week with High-A Wilmington, but he'll be shut down again for at least the next couple of weeks. The 23-year-old catcher originally landed on the injured list in March due to a fractured right pinkie finger.
JUNE 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Set for rehab games Pineda (finger) was cleared Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Wilmington, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Pineda was placed on the major-league injured list just before Opening Day after suffering a fractured finger on his right hand during spring training. He'll probably be stationed at Triple-A Rochester whenever he's deemed fully healthy, with Keibert Ruiz and Riley Adams remaining up as the catching tandem in Washington.
MAY 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Lands on 10-day IL The Nationals placed Pineda on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a right finger fracture.
Impact Pineda suffered the injury in early March. There's a good chance he'll go to the minors once healthy.
MARCH 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Won't open in big leagues Pineda (finger) won't break camp with the Nationals and will instead remain at the organization's extended spring training in Florida to begin the season, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSpo...
Impact Since the Nationals are likely keen on giving the 22-year-old backstop regular playing time, Pineda never seemed to be a good bet to be included on the Opening Day roster while Keibert Ruiz is installed as the big club's clear No. 1 catcher. The displaced right pinkie finger that Pineda suffered in early March essentially ended any small hope he might have had of joining the Nationals for Opening Day, so it's no surprise that he'll continue to conduct his rehab in Florida before likely reporting to Triple-A Rochester. Washington has yet to announce whether Pineda will be formally optioned to Triple-A or placed on the big club's 10-day injured list.
MARCH 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Catches bullpen session Pineda (finger) was spotted catching Patrick Corbin's bullpen session Wednesday at Nationals camp, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Pineda hasn't played in any Grapefruit League games since March 4 while he recovers from a right pinkie finger displacement, but the Nationals haven't shut him down from baseball activities. However, Pineda has yet to resume hitting and appeared to be tossing the ball lightly back to Corbin during the bullpen session, so the catcher doesn't look as though he's fully moved past the injury. Expect Washington to option Pineda to Triple-A Rochester in the coming days.
MARCH 22, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Still not cleared to throw Pineda (finger) has yet to be cleared to throw, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Pineda is able to do all other baseball-related activities as he recovers from a displacement at the tip of his right pinky finger. It's not clear if he'll be ready in time for Opening Day, but he's not going to make the Nationals' roster, anyway.
MARCH 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Has displacement in right pinky Pineda has been diagnosed with a displacement at the tip of his right pinky finger, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Pineda was struck by a pitch in a spring game Saturday. This shouldn't be all that much of a setback, as he is slated to catch in a back-field game at Nationals camp Sunday. The injury is an issue for him with throwing but not hitting.
MARCH 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up hand injury Pineda will undergo X-rays after being struck by a pitch on the hand in Saturday's spring game, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Impact The tests figure to reveal whether or not Pineda will miss any time with the injury. His status will be updated again when more information is released.
MARCH 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sits after two straight starts Pineda is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles.
Impact Following Keibert Ruiz's (groin) placement on the injured list Friday, Pineda has picked up two starts behind the plate, while Riley Adams will draw his third Wednesday. The Nationals also have Tres Barrera on the 28-man active roster, so a messy three-way timeshare at catcher could be on tap for the rest of the season while Ruiz is on the shelf.
