Impact It was a scary moment for Varland as he was hit in the chin area by a line drive off the bat of Manny Machado that had a 105 mph exit velocity. The right-hander went down to a knee before being able to leave the contest. Javy Guerra has replaced Varland on the mound.

Logs first career strikeout Varland threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen Thursday against the Cubs, striking out a batter and allowing two hits and a walk.

Impact Varland struck out Miles Mastrobuoni, the first batter he saw in his MLB career, before getting himself into and out of a bases-loaded situation in the seventh. The 26-year-old reliever has experience starting in the minors and will likely be used in a multi-inning role out of the bullpen this season.

Impact The Rule 5 pick has impressed this spring, posting a 4.15 ERA but a 17:1 K:BB over 8.2 innings. Varland seems likely to be used in a multi-inning relief role and will need to remain on the roster all season or be offered back to the Dodgers.

Opening eyes of late Varland allowed one hit over 3.1 innings and posted a 9:0 K:BB over his last three spring appearances.

Impact Varland allowed at least one earned run in three of his first four exhibition outings, but since of all things "turning down his PitchCom because the batters could hear it" -- as illustrated by Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel -- he has been almost perfect. Varland was selected by the Brewers in the Rule 5 draft and has never pitched above the Double-A level, so his odds of breaking camp with the big club are still long. However, the Brewers may not want to return him to the Dodgers, so he remains in the mix for the time being.
