Rays beat the Nationals 5-2 to open a 10-game homestand

Unlucky to lose Saturday Jax (1-5) allowed one unearned run on five hits and struck out five without walking a batter over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Angels.
Impact The Angels were able to run up the score against the Rays' bullpen, leaving Jax with an unfortunate loss despite a strong showing. He threw 44 of 63 pitches for strikes and completed five frames for the second start in a row. For the season, Jax has a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 41:18 K:BB over 44 innings across 20 appearances (nine starts). The right-hander is still being built up carefully, which makes it difficult for him to pitch long enough to qualify for wins. His next outing is projected to be at home versus the Nationals.
6 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
No-decision vs. Miami Jax did not factor into Sunday's decision against the Marlins, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out four across five scoreless innings.
Impact It was a nice bounce-back performance from Jax after allowing three home runs in his last outing against the Tigers this past Monday. He tossed 37 strikes on 62 pitches Sunday while generating nine whiffs, and it was the third time this season that he completed five frames, all of which have come over his last five starts. Jax sits at a 4.15 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 36:18 K:BB across 39 innings this season, and his next start is slated for next weekend on the road against the Angels.

Stumbles in fourth loss Jax (1-4) took the loss Monday against the Tigers, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk in four innings. He struck out five.
Impact Jax was trending up since joining Tampa Bay's starting rotation, but Monday's performance was a big step backward. After giving up two runs or fewer in each of his last six starts, the 31-year-old right-hander surrendered a season-worst seven hits (three home runs) and six runs. Jax will take a shaky 4.76 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 32:16 K:BB over 34 innings into his next scheduled outing over the weekend at home against the Marlins.
JUNE 2 • ROTOWIRE
Ready to start Monday Jax (back) is listed as Tampa Bay's scheduled starter for Monday's series opener against Detroit, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact The right-hander departed his last outing Tuesday in Baltimore after being struck in the back by a line drive, but it appears he's ready for his next turn through the rotation. After struggling as the Rays' closer to begin the campaign, Jax has pitched well since being moved to the starting rotation in late April with a 1.71 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB across 21 innings.

Day-to-day with back bruise Jax was diagnosed with a back contusion following his removal from Tuesday's game against Baltimore, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Jax was hit on the back by a 107.2-mph line drive in the second inning and was pulled when the Rays took the field for the third. His diagnosis suggests that he didn't suffer any structural damage as a result of the incident. However, the team will likely keep an eye on him over the next couple of days before confirming him for his next start -- tentatively slated to come against the Tigers on Monday.

Early exit Tuesday Jax was removed from Tuesday's game against the Orioles after getting hit by a comebacker, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Jax took a 107.2-mph line drive off his back during the second inning of Tuesday's contest. He remained in the game immediately afterward and was able to finish the inning, but the Rays replaced him on the mound in the third. He'll presumably undergo testing to determine the severity of the damage done, and the Rays could have an update on his status in the near future.

Fans six in no-decision Jax did not factor into Tuesday's decision against the Orioles, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out six across five innings.
Impact Jax yielded a leadoff homer to Taylor Ward, but the former kept the Orioles off the board the rest of the way. Jax completed five innings Wednesday for a second consecutive outing, needing just 62 pitches (41 strikes) to do so. He has a 1.93 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB across 14.0 innings in three starts since being moved to the Rays' rotation in early May. Griffin's next start is tentatively slated for next week on the road in a rematch against Baltimore.
MAY 20 • ROTOWIRE
Goes five innings in second start Jax did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Blue Jays, allowing four hits and four walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out one.
Impact In two outings since moving into Tampa Bay's rotation, Jax has allowed just two earned runs across nine innings. While he managed to make it through five innings Wednesday, Jax was ultimately stuck with a no-decision as the Rays would fall to Toronto in 10 innings. Overall, Jax sports a 3.91 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP and 18:14 K:BB across 23 innings this year. Assuming he remains in the rotation, Jax would line up for a home matchup with the Orioles in his next outing.

Daulton Varsho hits grand slam in 10th to lift Blue Jays past Rays, 5-3

Daulton Varsho hit a grand slam with one out in the 10th inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 5-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night
MAY 14 • Associated Press
Drawing another start Jax is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
Impact After making his first 11 appearances of the season as a reliever and recording no more than six outs in any of those contests, Jax has gradually gotten more stretched out while starting in his last three outings. He built up to 59 pitches and four innings in his most recent start Thursday in Boston, and if he's able to tack on another inning to his workload Wednesday, Jax will have a shot at qualifying for a win. The Rays haven't indicated whether Jax will remain in a starting role for the long haul, though the team will have a spot in the rotation available to him while both Steven Matz (elbow) and Joe Boyle (elbow) are stuck on the injured list.
MAY 10 • ROTOWIRE
Stretches out to four innings Jax allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Thursday.
Impact Jax stretched out to four innings and 59 pitches (38 strikes) as he continues to build up to being a rotation option. This was his first time allowing runs in an appearance he's started this year, and he's added a 7:3 K:BB across nine innings over his three starts. Jax has a 5.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 17:10 K:BB across 14 appearances spanning 18 innings overall. The right-hander is still at least two outings away from approaching a full starter's workload, and it could be longer if the Rays are cautious with him. Jax is tentatively projected for a road start versus the Blue Jays his next time out.

Simpson and Caminero lead Rays past Red Sox 8-4 for 7th consecutive victory

Pinch-hitter Chandler Simpson broke a sixth-inning tie with a two-run single and the Tampa Bay Rays won their seventh straight game by beating the Boston Red Sox 8-4
MAY 8 • Associated Press
Slated to start Thursday Jax is in line to start Thursday's game against the Red Sox in Boston, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact With the team's starting pitching depth having been tested by injuries in recent weeks, Jax has begun the process of getting stretched out as a potential rotation open. Jax has served as an opener for the Rays in both of his last two appearances, covering 2.1 innings April 26 against the Twins and then 2.2 innings Saturday against the Giants. Jax is likely to expand on that workload Thursday, though he probably won't hit the five innings he would need to qualify for a win. Assuming he isn't needed out of the bullpen during Wednesday's series finale versus the Blue Jays, Jesse Scholtens could work in bulk relief behind Jax and would have some appeal as a streaming option after scooping up wins in both of Jax's last two starts.

Effective as Saturday's opener Jax did not factor into the decision in Saturday's game against the Giants. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two across 2.2 scoreless innings.
Impact Just like he did against the Twins last Sunday, Jax was effective as the Rays' opener Saturday, tossing 29 strikes on 45 pitches while generating eight whiffs. That set up Jesse Scholtens to take over in the third, and he proceeded to earn the victory after allowing just one run over three innings' work. The Jax/Scholtens duo seems to be working for the Rays this season, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Tampa Bay roll with that combo again next week on the road against the Red Sox. Over his last seven games, Jax has posted a 3.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB across nine innings.

Opening Saturday, bigger role on tap? Jax is expected to serve as the Rays' opener for Saturday's game against the Giants, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.
Impact The Rays opted to use Jax as the opener for their game against the Twins this past Sunday, when he tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to set up Jesse Scholtens. It looks like it'll be much of the same Saturday, though Jax also noted to reporters Friday that he is working toward earning a role in the Rays' rotation. "This is an organization that's had some success doing this in the past...We're going to see how I respond to increasing workload, but I think, all in all, it's going to be the right decision." Jax has a 6.35 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB across 11.1 innings this season.
