Padres acquire Robbie Ray from Giants, Casey Mize from Tigers for another playoff push

The San Diego Padres have acquired left-hander Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants and right-hander Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers
AUGUST 3 • Associated Press
Credited with third win Canning (3-9) earned the win Sunday against San Francisco. He allowed one run on two hits and no walks without recording a strikeout over two innings of relief.
Impact The right-hander was the third pitcher used by San Diego, and despite covering just two innings while surrendering a solo homer to Osleivis Basabe (forearm), Canning was credited with the win. He has struggled mightily this season in both starting and relief roles, posting a 6.58 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 67:32 K:BB across 67 innings (17 appearances). The 30-year-old's spot on the roster could come into jeopardy if the Padres make any moves to bolster their pitching staff before Monday's trade deadline.
AUGUST 3 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to work in bulk relief Canning is expected to pitch in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Kyle Hart in Sunday's game against the Giants, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Canning will be available to pitch on three days' rest after he struck out four over three shutout innings of relief in his previous appearance in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Rockies. Hart tossed 2.2 innings as an opener Wednesday, and while he could work a bit deeper into Sunday's outing, he's still unlikely to reach the five innings he would need to hit to qualify for a win. As a result, Canning -- who claimed his second victory of the season Wednesday -- looks like the Padres pitcher most likely to earn a win Sunday.
AUGUST 2 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up second win Canning (2-9) earned the win Wednesday over the Rockies, allowing one hit and no walks across three scoreless innings. He struck out four.
Impact Working in a bulk role again, Canning looked much better Wednesday, holding Colorado to a lone single en route to his second win of the season, his first since June 17. It was an impressive bounce-back showing from the right-hander, who had given up nine runs (eight earned) across just 6.1 innings in his previous two appearances. Canning's ERA now sits at 6.65 on the season with a 1.57 WHIP and 67:32 K:BB across 65 innings.
JULY 30 • ROTOWIRE
Working behind opener again Canning is slated to work as a bulk reliever in Wednesday's contest versus the Rockies.
Impact It will be Kyle Hart serving as an opener ahead of Canning, just as it was last Thursday in Atlanta. Canning has not fared well this season either as a traditional starter (6.79 ERA) or bulk reliever (7.71 ERA), and with the trade deadline looming, his time to make a positive impression could be running out.

Struggles continue in bulk role Canning (1-9) took the loss Thursday against Atlanta, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits across 2.2 innings. He struck out four.
Impact The Padres elected to use an opener ahead of Canning on Thursday, but it didn't seem to help the right-hander. Canning gave up three homers in the loss -- two solo shots before Dominic Smith added a three-run blast in the fourth. Canning has now taken the loss in four consecutive outings while allowing eight earned runs across just 6.1 innings in his last two appearances. His ERA is up to 6.97 across 62 innings this season with a 1.63 WHIP and 63:32 K:BB.

JULY 23 • Associated Press
Following opener Thursday Canning will be used as a bulk reliever for Thursday's contest in Atlanta.
Impact Righties have a .628 OPS against the right-handed Canning this season, while lefties have pummeled him for a .939 OPS. Lefty Kyle Hart will be used as the Padres' opener before handing the baton to Canning.
JULY 23 • ROTOWIRE
Falls to 1-8 Canning (1-8) took the loss Saturday against the Royals, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks across 3.2 innings. He struck out four.
Impact Canning hasn't been able to get through five innings in any of his last five outings -- he's allowed 13 runs across 17.1 innings in that span. Overall, the right-hander's ERA sits at 6.67 with a 1.62 WHIP and 59:32 K:BB across 59.1 innings this season. Canning's currently in line to face the Marlins on the road his next time out.

Decent again in start Canning (1-7) allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five without walking a batter over 4.2 innings to take the loss Thursday versus the Diamondbacks.
Impact Canning's performance wasn't bad, but it wasn't good enough compared to Merrill Kelly's seven innings of one-run ball. Canning threw 48 of 74 pitches for strikes in the contest. He has bounced between starts and bulk-relief appearances lately, allowing 10 runs over 18 innings across his last five games (two starts). For the season, the right-hander has a 6.47 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 55:30 K:BB across 55.2 innings through 13 appearances (10 starts).

Unlucky loss in bulk-relief outing Canning (1-6) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings to take the loss versus the Dodgers on Saturday.
Impact Canning did fine in this bulk-relief outing, which shielded him from facing the top half of the Dodgers' order. He still came away with the loss as the Padres' bats came up cold. The right-hander has allowed eight runs over 13.1 innings with an 11:8 K:BB over his last four games. Overall, he has a 6.71 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 50:30 K:BB through 51 innings over 12 appearances (nine starts) this season. Canning looks like he'll still be a rotation option next week, as Randy Vasquez (ankle) is out at least through the All-Star break. Canning's next appearance is projected to be at home versus the Diamondbacks, though it's not yet clear if that will be a traditional start or another outing following an opener.
JULY 5 • ROTOWIRE
No longer starting Saturday Left-hander Wandy Peralta will be the Padres' starter against the Dodgers on Saturday.
Impact Canning was originally slated to start Saturday, but he'll now serve in a piggyback role after Peralta tosses one or two innings to open the contest, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Canning has struggled on the mound this season with a 7.09 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 46:28 K:BB across 47 innings in 11 appearances (nine starts).
JULY 4 • ROTOWIRE
Fades after solid three frames Canning completed 4.1 innings against the Cubs on Monday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters in a no-decision.
Impact Canning returned to a traditional starting role Monday after working behind an opener in each of his previous two starts. The veteran righty allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base, but he got through the first three frames without giving up any runs. Canning faded in the fourth, though, allowing a run on two hits and a HBP. He returned for the fifth and recorded just one out before being pulled with two runners on base, one of whom scored following his departure. Canning wasn't abysmal Monday, but he threw only 40 of 75 pitches for strikes and didn't exactly make an emphatic statement in his battle to retain a starting spot. With German Marquez (forearm) nearing activation, it isn't certain that Canning will take his next turn in the rotation.

JUNE 30 • Associated Press
Starting Monday Canning will draw the start on the mound in Monday's contest against the Cubs, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Canning will operate as a traditional starter in the series opener versus Chicago after following an opener in each of his last two appearances. The right-hander has given up 12 runs on 14 hits and nine walks while striking out 10 batters and hitting another over 10 innings in his last three outings, and he'll be squaring off with a Cubs squad that has won six of their last seven contests.
JUNE 29 • ROTOWIRE
Quick hook Tuesday Canning allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning Tuesday versus Atlanta. He didn't factor in the decision.
Impact This was penciled in as a bulk-relief outing, but Canning's poor showing to start the second inning took the bulk out of the conversation. He ended up being the pitcher with the fewest outs recorded for the Padres in this contest. It's another low mark in a season that has had few things to celebrate for the 30-year-old. Canning has a 7.38 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 43:26 K:BB through 42.2 innings over 10 appearances (eight starts). It's unclear how much longer he'll be an option in San Diego's rotation -- if JP Sears does well Wednesday, Canning could be the one to lose a starting role once German Marquez (forearm) is activated.
JUNE 24 • ROTOWIRE
Set to follow opener Canning is expected to work as the bulk reliever behind opener Wandy Peralta against Atlanta on Tuesday, Lindsay Crosby of BravesToday.com reports.
Impact The right-hander worked behind an opener in his previous appearance and delivered one of his better outings of the season, allowing one run across 4.1 frames to pick up his first victory. Despite that improved form, Canning's 6.64 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 41:25 K:BB across 42 innings for the season make him a volatile streaming option while going up against a strong offense.
JUNE 23 • ROTOWIRE
Earns first win in bulk relief Canning (1-5) earned the win against the Cardinals on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 4.1 innings.
Impact Canning entered in the second inning and was actually the only Padres pitcher to allow a run, which came via a single in the fifth. The 30-year-old has opened June in uneven fashion, yielding one earned run in two of three outings with a seven-run blowup in between. Overall, he owns a 6.64 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 41:25 K:BB across 42 innings this season. With German Marquez (forearm) closing in on a return, it's unclear what Canning's role will be for his next turn.

JUNE 17 • Associated Press
Following opener in St. Louis Canning will serve as the Padres' primary pitcher Wednesday in St. Louis, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Canning has a 10.12 ERA in the first inning this season and lefties are slashing .370/.475/.696 off him, so the Padres will avoid having the righty face lefties JJ Wetherholt and Alec Burleson in the first frame. Bradgley Rodriguez will take the ball first Wednesday as an opener.
JUNE 17 • ROTOWIRE
Ambushed by Baltimore Canning (0-5) took the loss Friday, surrendering seven runs on six hits and five walks over five innings as the Padres fell 7-3 to the Orioles. He struck out six.
Impact The 30-year-old right-hander got tagged for three runs in the first and second innings and served up multiple homers for the third time in his last four starts. Canning's return to California after a one-year stint with the Mets has been a disaster so far -- since coming off the IL in early May, he's stumbled to a 7.17 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 39:22 K:BB in 37.2 innings. With German Marquez (forearm) on the same schedule during his rehab assignment and pitching well, the clock is ticking on Canning's time in the rotation. He's set to make his next start on the road next week in St. Louis.
